The Victorian Novel Grows Up

"The Way of All Flesh" seems to be best known as the Victorian novel that thumbed its nose at Victorian novels. For this reason, it's frequently mentioned in talks of literary history, but I don't ever hear of anyone praising Samuel Butler's novel from an artistic perspective. Actually, I find the book more interesting for its story than for its place in the development of 19th and 20th century literature.
I tried to read this novel once and only got through the first 100 pages or so. I found it remarkably dull and dry, and the tone of the first-person narrator (Mr. Overton), who stops the action every 10 pages or so to offer personal asides that reveal more about him than about the characters he's writing about, I thought to be snide and irritating.
But I hate not finishing a book, so I picked it up again, this time understanding that it would be a dry read and prepared to appreciate it for its historical context. To my surprise, I found myself caught up in the story and thought the whole thing very funny. I can't believe I missed all the humour the first time through.
I hesitate to give this novel too much credit for deflating the pompous bubble of Victorian morality, because other authors writing at the same time as Butler were doing the same thing (Dickens for one can be incredibly caustic). But there is a maturity to Butler's writing that is not present in other Victorian writers. This novel feels much more modern than anything else written pre-1900, and even feels more modern than some books written after. Unlike Dickens, whose characters are either all good or all bad and have about as much depth as the characters you'd find in a comic book (this isn't a criticism--I like Dickens), Butler's characters (at least Ernest, his protagonist) seem very much alive and flawed. Ernest is easily influenced by everyone around him and makes decisions based on how he thinks he should act rather than how he wants to act. He doesn't know what he wants out of life, he's a screw up, he's got lousy luck. All of these things make him quite endearing because they make him so human. The scathing criticism of religious hypocrisy and moral bombast exhibited by the majority of people in Ernest's life can be funny, especially if you agree with it (as I do), but the story itself is much more interesting than the social commentary.
I would definitely recommend this book. It's not necessarily a page turner, but it consistently held my interest. Just remember that it's supposed to be funny. Think of Butler as a 19th century Evelyn Waugh, and you should do just fine.

Timeless Classic Remains Fresh and Stimulating

The Way of All Flesh covers six generations of strife in the Pontifex family, and spans a period from 1750 to 1880. However, the bulk of the story concerns the life of Ernest Pontifex, from about age 5 up to age 28, and describes his unsatisfactory relations with his parents, his school, his church, his wife, and his friends. Sometimes we feel sorry for Ernest, because many of his problems are caused by unbelievably cruel or thoughtless people, and sometimes we're furious with him, because he himself is the author of at least half of his troubles, but either way his misfortunes make him stronger and move him steadily along the path to maturity. Throughout, the book remains an easy read, although the writing is very witty and often rewards close examination.
Even today, 100 years after the book's publication, a reader finds many things to identify with. Anyone who felt unjustly treated by his or her parents or teachers will find much to sympathize with here. Anyone who has wrestled with the conflict between Reason and Faith will find much to think about here. Given how much change the last century has seen, it's surprising how many of the issues still seem fresh and relevant, and the book definitely makes you think about them. It is easy to see how many people have described reading The Way of All Flesh as a turning point in their lives.
A point worth keeping in mind: the characters are all described from Ernest's point of view. Several clues tell us that Ernest exaggerates the cruelty of various characters - some of whom seem evil beyond belief, and I think it's quite clear that, at these points, we're supposed to smile at Ernest - not shake our heads at the author. This is most obvious with Ernest's schoolmaster, Dr. Skinner, whom Ernest consistently sees as a pompous fool, but who we also know is very popular with the best students, and who shows other signs of being a much better man than Ernest believes him to be.
The footnotes in my edition (Penguin Classics 1986) are very skimpy, focusing on comparing elements from Ernest's fictional life to Samuel Butler's real one. The failure of the notes to translate passages in French or Latin, or to explain very contemporary references, is inexcusable. (E.g. but for the recent controversy over his Beatification, we'd have no clue that "Pio Nono" was Pope Pius IX.) Hoggart's introduction (1966) is decent but a bit dated, not having weathered as well as the book itself!

An overlooked gem.

I won't comment on the Kindle edition-vs-the hard copy of this book, but on the book itself. Having heard of it forever, when the Kindle version came out, free, I went for it, and was amazed. It was written in the 1860's, but not published until Butler's death in 1903 or 1905, and the reader can see why. It's a semi-autobiographical novel about a young man growing up in rural surroundings in nineteenth-century England. His father, the local curate, and all the other "pillars" of English society are shown to be hopelessly pompous, ignorant hypocrites, while still believable as characters. When he finally comes into some money,independently, his entire wretched family pitches in to convince him, first, that he is unworthy of such good fortune, and, second, that he should give it all to them. Butler's writing style is to leave most of the dialogue indirect, so there aren't a lot of quotation marks in the book, but that gives him plenty of room to offer snide comments on the proceedings. The resulting style is like a three-way cross between Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Anthony Burgess.

Excellent book. I highly recommend it. Although Computational Intelligence could include almost any subject, this book is a comprehensive review of the most agreed-upon paradigms in CI. Haven't checked out the CD that comes with the book, so I cannot comment about it.

Just the book I have been searching for.

For two years I have been looking in libraries and bookstores for a book that would frankly and appropriately explain puberty in a way that my sons will understand and be comfortable with. In my search I came across dozens of books that were boring or juvenile or contrary to the Christian values we believe, but I knew within two minutes of looking through this book that it was the one I had been looking for. It could not be more kid-friendly in regards to readability, creativity, sound and respectful advice, and even humor. After visiting with my 11 year old about the book, I was very comfortable to leave it in his possession to read through as he has questions about growing up.

I am a fifth grade teacher who teaches a unit on Human Growth and Development to my students. I was looking to get a wider array of materials for my class so I order Just for Boys based on other Amazon recommendations. Most of the informations was, well... fine (not great, not good, but fine). However, the section on "Girls, Girls, Girls" was disheartening. It presented a pretty limited view of sexuality and not the view of young women I am hoping to foster. I will not be sharing this book for my students or my son.

I have been looking for a couple of weeks for a good puberty book for my 10 year old. "Just for Boys: A Book About Growing Up" is not bad if you a looking for a book that is just about puberty. I liked that it said to "ask your dad or another trusted adult" if you have questions. That said, I found a book I like better - "The Body Book for Boys" by Mar, so I am returning "Just for Boys." The main thing I did not like is that "Just for Boys" says a few times that puberty can be scary and it might make you feel "like a freak" or "freaking out." This is not really the message I want to convey to my son. Puberty is natural - neither my husband or myself remember "freaking out" or being scared during puberty (and neither of our parents talked to us about it either!). I just want a reference book my son can look to in case he has a question that he'd rather not ask mom or dad about, but I don't want him to be scared of puberty. Overall, "Just for Boys" is better than some of the boy puberty books I've looked at, but it just wasn't the one for us.

About the Author
Axel Uhl is Head of the Business Transformation Academy and a member of the Business Transformation Services Leadership Team within the Services Division of SAP. Dr Uhl is a professor at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. Prior to joining SAP, he held senior management positions at Novartis, KPMG, DaimlerChrysler and Allianz. He has a PhD in Economics, and Master degrees in Business Administration, Educational Sciences and Information Technology. Lars Gollenia is Head of the global Business Transformation Services at SAP and a member of the SAP Services Delivery Executive team. Lars is the co-founder and sponsor of the Business Transformation Academy, a leadership network comprising leading academics and selected executives. About the Author
Arthur Miller (1915–2005) was born in New York City and studied at the University of Michigan. His plays include All My Sons (1947), Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953), A View from the Bridge and A Memory of Two Mondays (1955), After the Fall (1963), Incident at Vichy (1964), The Price (1968), The Creation of the World and Other Business (1972) and The American Clock (1980). He also wrote two novels, Focus (1945), and The Misfits, which was filmed in 1960, and the text for In Russia (1969), Chinese Encounters (1979), and In the Country (1977), three books of photographs by his wife, Inge Morath. His later work included a memoir, Timebends (1987); the plays The Ride Down Mt. Morgan (1991), The Last Yankee (1993), Broken Glass (1994), and Mr. Peter's Connections (1999); Echoes Down the Corridor: Collected Essays, 1944–2000; and On Politics and the Art of Acting (2001). He twice won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and in 1949 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Miller was the recipient of the National Book Foundation’s 2001 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters in 2002, and the Jerusalem Prize in 2003.

Christopher Bigsby is a professor of American Studies at the University of East Anglia. He edited the Penguin Classics editions of Miller's The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, and All My Sons.

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

A MYSTERIOUS CALLER FOR A PARANORMAL ROMANCE

Reading the title of the book I'm now going to review and its brief introduction, a movie with the same paranormal prologue came to my mind: "White Noise", whose protagonist is Michael Keaton, who's lost his wife in an accident ( her body was found in the bottom of a lake) after that she tries to contact him from the after-life, and she will show him future murders... I don't want to go further, because my review will be about "Wrong number" by Sandra Ross.
This time she will go through paranormal, and this book is a combination of different emotions and elements: the protagonist is Devon, whose husband, Dan, has suddenly disappeared.
Police has made a cruel discovery: Dan's car's fallen in the river, but his body seems to be missing.
This is the beginning of a mystery, that seems endless: infact, the woman will start receiving very strange calls from a stranger caller who continuously asks for her husband.
From now on, reader will start asking himself many questions, among them: is it Dan from the kingdom of the dead who's calling her? Is he really dead?
I think that Sandra Ross has found a way to make our curiosity even stronger: she has added erotica and passion to this paranormal story.
What I didn't appreciate is the lenght of some scenes, because of suspence, but actually it happens even when I watch a movie, and I try to be calm waiting for the "boom" moment!
The more I wait the more I stress out.... whatever, if you are looking for erotica, paranormal and mystery in the same book, "Wrong Number" is the right choice.

Dial A for Average

Being single has its advantages---and, if one is not cautious, also some serious drawbacks.

In 2011, shortly after my divorce, I signed up for an online singles website that catered to single, divorced, separated, and widowed people who wanted to connect with someone and hopefully begin a relationship. Not too long afterwards, I met a young woman (whom I'll call Jane) who lived in my area.

It certainly seemed promising. She was fairly tall, proportioned well, educated, no children, worked part-time, had her own place, enjoyed reading and music (two of my favorite pastimes). She was in her mid-twenties and from the area, so it wasn't as if she lived half a world away or anything like that. To top it off, I found Jane quite attractive.

So far, so good.

We exchanged several emails, making casual inquiries about each other's goals, likes and aversions, dreams, fears, and family. I learned that she was estranged from her parents and was an only child. When I inquired about whether she would reconcile with them or not, I noticed she changed the subject rather quickly. I chalked it up to my not being sensitive enough to her situation, apologized, and let the matter drop.

Eventually we were comfortable enough with each other that we decided to meet for coffee at a local Barnes and Noble. We had a lovely time and talked for nearly four hours. Jane was vivacious, positive, erudite, and an excellent listener. I found her to be an excellent conversationalist as well, and I felt emboldened enough to ask her out again, which she readily accepted.

We exchanged personal home numbers and began calling each other once or twice a week. This was fine for me, as I normally do not talk on the phone all that much and prefer face-to-face meetings.

Then the plot changed.

Whereas I was happy chatting online or by phone once or twice a week, she preferred a daily dialogue. Soon it had crept up to twice a day. When I tried telling her that I couldn't always be available twice a day, much less every day, she became petulant and wanted to know with whom else I was talking to. When I replied no one, she made it very plain that she was not too happy.

My eyebrows did a quizzical raise all on their own.

As it turned out, Jane had a habit of calling me whenever the mood struck her. Normally, this wouldn't bother me, but when phone calls start arriving at your workplace and you never give out your work number to anyone, even someone like Jane, then that's a bit creepy.

The phone calls, innocuous at first, gradually became more incessant and interruptive. Several times my co-workers had to take me aside to tell me in no uncertain terms that my personal issues were interfering with their work. My boss at the time corroborated this, and subsequently I was forced to confront Jane about her numerous faux pas. Initially, she agreed to respect the work environment and let me do my job, but not long after our conversation, the phone calls started up again.

It was her or my job. I chose the latter.

Then the phone calls began arriving at all hours. It seemed as if my cell phone had a broken ring tone. My inbox flooded with her texts and voice mails. At one point I received no less than thirty text messages in one day.

At first I ignored her. Then I called her---twice---to ask that she please not call me again, and to please leave me alone. All I received in reply was an earful of hateful invective and several accusations of cheating on her.

I hadn't even realized we were an exclusive item.

After that, I blocked Jane's number. I changed my personal phone number. I even spoke to a lawyer about filing harrassment charges and seeking an order of protection against her.

Then, after about a week of being under siege, the calls and texts abruptly stopped. I never heard from Jane again. I went back to the singles website where we had originally met and discovered that her account was deleted. When I decided to risk a volley of verbal abuse and dialed her number, it had been disconnected.

I went online and Googled her name in the search engine. Nothing. It was as if she had never existed.

So when I previewed Sandra Ross's "Wrong Number," my experiences with the Janester flooded my memory banks.

In "Number," the character Devon is newly single, having lost her husband, Dan, and moving away to a small town where she could open up a bookstore and make a new start for herself. In this regard I was able to draw parallels between Devon and myself.

The eerie aspect of "Number" occurred when Devon began receiving phone calls at all hours of the day. Each time, the male voice on the other end of the line would ask for Dan, despite Devon's repeated requests for him to identify himself. While the phone calls were not overwhelming in number like Jane's were, they rivaled hers for chutzpah and obstinacy. The only difference is that Devon's unknown caller maintains a pleasant disposition at all times, whereas I had dealt with a real harridan.

I strongly identified with Devon because, insofar as my personal privacy, time, and information were concerned, I felt violated. It was a very uncomfortable feeling to wake up and dread hearing the phone ring, or if I had shut it off for the day, to turn it on to make a call and discover umpteen messages in my inbox or on my voice mail.

Ross creates a fairly suspenseful plot. She makes the apartment's setting the primary focus of Devon's dilemma while creating several subplots throughout the story that center upon Devon's mourning Dan's loss; her unspoken sexual needs that she allows to consume her thoughts; and her need to reconcile her psychic abilities with being able to understand why her husband was taken away from her so soon.

"Number" might have been a bit better had Devon's psychic ability been extrapolated to counter the mysterious phone calls and confront the unknown caller. Additionally, how she received her power could have been further explored.

All told, Ross has written a decent tome that is fast-paced and provides her fans a nice source of entertainment.

Wrong Number is an interesting kind of novel that makes any reader very curious from the very beginning. It does this with one very simple little trick- it simply attracts and catches the reader's eye no matter who it is and what personality they might actually have and makes him or her immediately want to read on ahead and discover more about the events that are supposed to transpire within the story. The story, which is very interesting and involves a well-crafted plotline that has numerous different wonderful aspects that divide to benefit not only the reader and his or her thinking but also his or her overall knowledge and experiences with that. Basically saying, the book is very self-sufficient. It is not only able to easily become a contributor to an excellent time spent reading; it is also very entertaining and educating. It provides the reader with very deep and relatively meaningful things to consider- such as various thoughts of passion and love and desperateness or longing for something appealing. The novel is also in addition very sexual, which can of course have both its benefits and cons. For instance, the cons might be the fact that some younger readers might not actually find the book very appropriate for themselves because they are not mature enough yet to quite enjoy the novel as well. However, on the other hand, other readers might find the intimacy of the sexual content a real and very needed otherwise lacking aspect and thus would indulge in the novel with much enthusiasm.
What else exactly makes this novel so marvelous? Well, basically speaking, another easily spotted aspect of it which contributes to it being such a truly splendid and excellent read would be quite possibly the fact that it also has a very good language about its writing and phrasing that becomes especially appealing once a reader begins actually indulging deeply within the novel. This aspect of being professionally written and phrased with real and higher than average quality of the English language is what makes the novel such an unforgettable reading experience. What I mean precisely for this is the fact that as in any kind of book, language and writing is one of those things that truly contribute to a good and enjoyable read that distracts the reader and pulls his or her attention deep inside the pages of the book and wraps him or her within the entangling storyline, making sure that he or she cannot escape quite as easily as suggested by say, any other kind of characteristic of the book, such as the title itself, or the cover. That's why this book is so enjoyable and unique. You won't regret reading it.
