About the Author

Adrian Graham Streather was born on December 25, 1958. Upon leaving school he joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1975, where he trained as a Scientific Instrument Maker and gained additional qualifications in the electronics field. Adrian is the author of a number of Porsche books published with Veloce, including several in their Essential Buyer's Guide Series.

Featured Recipe: Stone Pale Ale and Garlic Stir-Fried Brussels Sprouts
Serves 2 as a main course or 4 as a side dish

Ingredients
1 pound brussels sprouts (about 4 cups)
1/4 cup canola or vegetable oil
1/4 pound pancetta, diced
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups (12 fluid ounces) Stone Pale Ale
1/4 cup vegetable stock
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Finely diced tomato, for garnish
Shaved or grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, for garnish

Instructions
Set up a steamer with 1 to 2 inches of salted water and bring the water to a rolling boil. Put the brussels sprouts in the steamer, cover, and cook until slightly tender, about 4 minutes. Drain and immediately transfer the Brussels sprouts to a large bowl of ice water to halt the cooking and preserve their bright green color. Let them cool in the ice water for about 1 minute, then drain. Lay them on a clean dish towel and pat dry. Cut them in half vertically, right through the core.

In a large wok or cast-iron skillet, heat the oil over high heat until it begins to shimmer. Turn the heat down to medium. Add the pancetta and cook, stirring occasionally, until it begins to brown. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Turn the heat up to high, add the brussels sprouts, and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, 4 to 5 minutes.

Add the beer and continue to cook over high heat until the liquid is mostly evaporated. Deglaze the pan by adding the vegetable stock, stirring and scraping up any browned bits that may be affixed to the pan. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with the tomato and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve immediately.

Coolest. Beer book. EVER!

There are two kinds of beer drinkers in the world--those who are rabid fans of Stone Brewing Company, and those who don't like it at all. I've never met anyone who's neutral about Stone beers. I've never seen anyone take a trial sip of a Stone beer and say, "Well, I guess it's all right." No, the response is either, "Wow, that's great! Pour me another!" or "That's the worst beer I've ever tasted. Gimme a glass of one of those fizzy yellow beer-like substances instead." For those of us who ARE fans of extreme beers, those that go far beyond any reasonable limits of flavor, strength and hoppiness, Stone is a beer geek's Nirvana.

I first learned about Stone in 1998 at a beer festival in Tucson, Arizona, two years after founders Greg Koch and Steve Wagner started the company in San Marcos, California. At the Stone table was an intriguing beer I'd never heard of called "Arrogant Bastard." "I gotta try me some of that," I thought. But it wasn't that easy. Before the staff would serve it, one had to prove to them that one was "worthy" enough to drink such a powerful beer. That was a stroke of marketing genius (as is the label on AB bottles, by the way, which starts out, "This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it."). Anyway, I don't remember how I proved I was worthy, but after just one sip of AB, I was hooked. And I really mean hooked. For the next ten years, my wife and I (we have identical beer tastes) flew or drove 1,700 miles round trip from our home in El Paso, Texas, to southern California specifically to attend Stone's annual anniversary parties. We got to know Greg a little--at first, he couldn't believe we'd traveled so far just to drink a few of his beers, but then he got used to seeing us there every year. We only stopped going recently because the parties got crazy busy, tickets became hard to get if you didn't live in the area and our tolerance for jostling crowds of thousands has declined. But we still consider Stone beers to be among the best available anywhere, and there are always dozens of them in our dedicated beer refrigerator.

So if you like Stone, you know what I'm talkin' about. Now, how about this book, "The Craft of Stone Brewing Company." Well, it's everything Stone represents, and then some. Exquisitely designed, well-made, very readable (in Greg's inimitable style--think a book-length beer label!), superbly illustrated and packed with useful and fascinating insider information. It's a volume that EVERY fan of Stone beers, or even beer or brewing in general, should pick up immediately, no questions asked.

Here's what you'll find inside the covers. Kicking off is a 14-page section called "The Nature of Beer" that tells what it is, what goes into it and how it's made. It's fairly basic stuff, but still a useful refresher, and the sidebar insights of the Stone guys here and throughout the book are fascinating. The next eight-page section, "Beer Through the Ages," looks at the evolution of brewing in Europe and America and the emergence of the craftbrewing industry. Then comes the 38-page "A Story Called Stone." This section tells all about the founding and growth of Stone. The fascinating historical narrative is filled with anecdotes and trivia about the company, the key employees, the facilities, the brewing process, the marketing and much more. For example, I'll bet you don't know some of the other names Greg and Steve considered for the company before they settled on "Stone" (See page 35). The next section, at about 30 pages, describes more than 50 Stone beers, including their styles, release dates, availabilities, hop profiles, strengths and IBU ratings, along with an interesting paragraph or two for each. So many beers, so little time...

Next comes "'Dr' Bill Presents: Beer How-To's," a 12-page guide to buying, storing, aging, pouring and serving fine craft beer. Don't gloss over this section, even if you think you're an expert on the subject. You'll still probably learn something. The next 36 pages contain 19 selected recipes from the kitchen at the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens, the new facility that the company moved into in November 2006. Yes, not only is this a beer book, it's also a cookbook! But wait, there's more! If you're a homebrewer (I'm not), you'll be enthralled with the last section of the book, which features recipes for five-gallon batches of 18 selected Stone beers.

Did I mention that you should buy "The Craft of Stone Brewing Company" right away? What are you waiting for? In the meantime, I'm going to go crack open an Old Guardian...

A Good Book - Worth Buying

When I first saw this book, I really liked how the cover looked. It's sturday looking, and it feels nice. The colors in the photos on the front are nice, as well.

Here's what I like about the book:

It explains how beer is made in Layman's terms, and as a homebrewer, I have to say that the explanations of the malts in the book are really nice. It would be a good place to start for review if you're getting into all grain brewing. It's not that you could buy this book and brew (some people could, but not me), in my opinion, but it's again, a nice way to explain the process to someone who might be slightly interested.

The story of Stone Brewing and how it came about is also a pretty inspiring story. I wish everyone had the gumption to do their job as ambitiously as Greg and Steve do/did.

They have a lot of their recipes in this book, even ones they used to make but don't anymore (Heat Seeking Wheat), but that brings me to the next part of this review.

Some of the things that irk me about this book:

No recipe for Arrogant Bastard. Why not? There is a podcast called Can You Brew It with Jamil Zainasheff where they talk with the head brewer, Mitch, and he is pretty nebulous about what the ingredients are. Regardless, after the first show which produced a beer that was close, but not a clone, they re-brewed and the second batch was declared a clone. The recipe is available on the Northern Brewer forums, and here's a personal anecdote - I've had a bottle of beer that was brewed using that recipe and it was SPOT ON, other than the fact that the homebrewed version was probably fresher than the Stone version. What's more, my friend who brewed it, had NEVER had Arrogant Bastard before, since he can't get it in Iowa. I ended up getting him a bottle and he did a side-by-side, with the same results. Why couldn't the guys at Stone at least take the time to point this recipe out if they thought it was good, or say that it wasn't even in the ballpark? What's interesting is that they point out how AB was an accident, and that the amounts of malts were miscalculated when making the Pale Ale. So, could you experiment with the Pale Ale recipe in here and maybe mess around with that, although I've heard that they only used Chinook hops with this beer.

I suppose I could outline what recipes they have here, but I'm editing this review, as it took Amazon a day to digest it. Their more common ones, Stone Pale Ale, Stone Smoked Porter, and Levitation are in the book. No Ruination, but I suppose they make up for that with the 4th Anniversary IPA recipe and a lot of collaboration recipes. I suppose they didn't waste time giving you the basic recipes, but they do give you some of the more unique ones.

At first, I didn't see the Original Gravity and Final Gravity targets, but they are usually in the gray section on the second page for the recipe. They do put the percentages, if you want to enter the grains that way into a brewing software package, which is nice. I still would have liked to seen an SRM (for color) value added. Efficiencies weren't targeted at 75%...they tend to vary when you put the exact amounts into ProMash.

While I expounded greatly on those two items, overall, it doesn't kill the book. Again, if you like reading Greg Koch's writing (which, I have to admit, I do)and you like Stone beers (thanks for the Levitation recipe!) then you should buy this book. I'm glad that I have it in my home brew book collection.

Great Book On The Story Behind Stone Brewing Company

I am a big fan of craft brewed beer and micro brewerys. This hardcover book is beautifully done in high quality paper, with nice color photo's and graphics. Beyond the story behind the brewery, this book also provides some great recipe's for some unique pub foods served at their brewery restaurant and a good selection of homebrew recipes for a number of their craft brewed beers. I am working my way through the food recipes and plan to dust off my home brew equipment and try a couple of the homebrew recipes.

Whether you are looking for an interesting coffee table book, some unique pub food recipes or want to try your hand at one of their homebrew recipes, you should not be disappointed.

Great resource for crafters!

This is a really amazing book and a wonderful resource for crafters of any experience level with paper flowers. The authors provide endless inspiration for both creating flowers and ways to use your creations. The book is split up into several sections, including pictures of completed flowers for pure inspiration, a detailed how-to section with lots of instructions and tips on general techniques and materials, step-by-step instructions on how to make flowers featured in the earlier chapter, and then the largest collection of templates I've ever seen. Not only do the authors tell you how to make the flowers in the book, they also encourage you to mix and match templates and create your own to form entirely new flowers. While the flowers in this book are not the typical life-like recreations of real flowers found in other books, many of the designs can be altered to create realistic and beautiful flowers that can be mixed in with traditional crepe or tissue roses, daisies, and the like in any bouquet, arrangement, or favor. There are also a number of fun, whimsical designs that seem very fitting for more casual purposes.

I am working on creating paper flowers for my wedding next summer, and am excited to include a number of flowers and ideas from this book. The images included are just gorgeous and the instructions are very detailed, even rated for difficulty so that users can know what to expect when starting a project. Honestly, the resources listing in the back of the book alone is invaluable for someone who has been trying to track down all the various online stores for different kinds of crepe paper, tissue, flower stamens, floral tape, decorative scissors, etc. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in crepe-paper flower making. Especially if used in conjunction with a book like "How to Make 100 Paper Flowers" by Maria Noble, you'll learn everything you need and never run out of ideas and projects!

THE Guide for Paper Enthusiasts....

I love paper arts and either dabble or dive into them depending on my schedule, need to indulge, budget, etc, and I've been committing a greater-than-average amount of time into paper arts booka for the last year. I've got a bookcase of some really cute books, some informative, and some works or art that I will never master. This book has it all, and then some. Photos, text, templates, bound in a really thick book. Not the usual craft book.

There is a section devoted to the "examples" they have made for clients, all 75 flowers are magical. The next section describes the materials used to make paper flowers. The fact that they don't force any brand is a plus, if you aren't new to paper arts, you already have most of the materials, except, perhaps, for the stems and centers. The skills section is vital unless you are an expert in creating paper flowers. It is really useful that they have picture and text intermixed and that they break down flowers to their smallest parts. (center, stamen, stem, petal, etc) Each technique is introduced "contextually". So many helpful images of action and steps. Different means of shaping for different paper and a focus on creating rounded, organic forms. Because that is what nature is, correct? Organic, rounded flowers, no matter what colors you use are going to look amazingly real, just like all of the examples in the book, over something straight, flat, and fake. There is none of that in this guide. Not in the images or the writing, or even their style, it is really natural, beautiful and likeable.

The how-to section gives you just that for each one of those 75 flowers, broken down to their visual individual parts, and marks the skill level of each one. They are using a scale, of 1,2 or 3,; 1(basic techniques) to 3 (advanced techniques). The authors are so kind as to give us some advice as how someone with a solid 2 level skill could modify a 3 flower project to their strengths, which I find especially helpful, and give you a rubric for mastery at each level. This is something more "high-level" crafters need to include in their guides; not just beginner techniques, not just advanced techniques or looks, but what does the spectrum look like, what does it include? How can I take a project that is too advanced and target it towards my level (What to remove in the flower? What to add to make the project look good, help me improve skills, but not look like my 3rd grader did it?)

After the how-tos, as the other reviewers have stated, there are pages of templates to the shapes used for the flower - well over 200. They include a good source guide. One warning to the paper newbie, some of this paper and related materials can be extremely expensive. You can go through and find the materials that work for you and your project(s) at any price point with the variety of resources the authors include.

This will be THE paper (handmade) flower book for the year, if not years. What an excellent job this couple has done on their first book (she was an style director at Martha Stewart Weddings and they run a design business), I look forward to seeing more from them!

This is a gorgeous book, I actually was shocked.

My book arrived this morning. I'm not sure what I was expecting, maybe a few projects and templates. OMG I was so shocked when I opened the box -- a really beautiful hardcover book. I think this book is worth way more than the retail price, but I'm grateful that I was able to get it.

Page after page of beautiful, color-rich flowers, either fantasy or actual blooms. Templates, instructions, supplier list all included. They bring up things I hadn't even thought of, such as using watercolor and acrylic paints to create realistic looking effects.

This book, which is a work of art in and of itself, is going to get plenty of use. I feel as if it's Christmas and I finally got what I actually wanted.

This is a must-have!

About the Author

Clare Gutierrez grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Colorado as one of four children. A registered nurse, she now lives in the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas. Together with her husband, a medical doctor, they host first-class photographers the world over at Santa Clara Ranch—a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary for native species, some of which are unique to the area.

Good Historical Novel

Historical Novels are undoubtedly my favorite type of literature. I thought this story did a great job of portraying the lives of women in this time-it was very difficult to be independent, and yet this character, Caty, managed to be quite strong and definitely a survivalist. If you enjoyed the Outlander series, you will love this book. It is even more personable than they were. I thought it was much more evolved than Ms. Gutierrez's first novel, Dancing with the Boss. A good read!

Ever so often, and not nearly as often as my longing heart would desire, I stumble across a true diamond amongst the many crystals and gemstones that make their way to my desk. When I read the synopsis for Come Winter, it sounded intriguing.
Once I opened the book and began to fall into the spell of the first lines of the story, I realized that this was going to be something more than just another historical novel. Within pages I knew I had found a master of the written word. The words seemed to have slid off her pen and onto the written page with a magic all their own. They wove their own tapestry and came off the page in such imagery that my mind’s eye was a rolling screen throughout the story.
Clare demonstrated a great appreciation for the plight of noble women during the early mid ages when they were but chattel of their lords and kings, to be traded and passed on as part and parcel of the holdings. Though this subject has been demonstrated in many a novel, I have never seen it set as the central theme, nor presented so passionately through the eyes of a woman of noble birth as it was in Come Winter.
Katy, the heroine of the book, was a woman of strength, a lady of great passion and one who had the capability to love deeply. She was a unique lady of her time, having received a well rounded education, speaking several languages, reading and writing in the same, a healer, and a leader. But because she was a woman, she was but an item to be owned, to be traded and bartered by parent, captor, until she finally obtained the highest position that a woman could obtain, Queen. Even when she reach this vaulted position, she found she was still but a possession, a captive, and at the pleasure of her lord and master, the king. She would never be free.
Clare took the time to develop her characters to give them the breath of life and to allow the reader to see what it was to live, through their eyes. We learned to feel their pain and despair as well as their joys and ecstacies. The POV was not limited to that of Katy, but also that of the men who were a part of her adult life through the years. It added an additional dimension to the characters, giving them well rounded perspectives and allowing the narrative to provide a complete picture of the story as it moved ever forward through the years, first from France to Scotland, then to Spain and finally to Italy.
After finishing Come Winter, out of curiosity, I looked up to see how many books Clare Gutierrez has written and only found one addition book published in 2012. I believe Clare has the talent to become a writing force to contend with. Her ability to write a believable historical novel, not so much one that was based on factual events, but one that nailed it, on living conditions of the time. Her style is much that of Michelle Moran, or Phillipa Gregory. It is rich in imagery and full bodied prose that throws the reader into the Age of the setting without actually forcing them to try to deal with terms and language they do not know or understand. Most of all she leaves you wanting more. You cannot ask for better than that. This is a must read book for any historical, romance, adult fiction, woman’s fiction fan. FIVE STARS

AN INTERVIEW
Why did your choose this story to write?
The story unfolded on its own. I had the beginning in my head but needed a time and place were such a thing could take place. A little research, such as the wifenapping, and I was off running. While doing research to find a way to use the scenes I had in my head, I kept returning to the very great difficulty women have faced in every 'age' in history. The research gave me LOTS of ingredients for a story. The way I write is, I suppose, a little strange. As I begin to put into words the story in my mind, the characters take on a life of their own. Caty developed in just such a way. As she moved through her life, the world around her changed.

Do you have a love affair with history?
I do love historical movies, books, architecture etc.
I noticed that you live on a wonderful preserve and ranch in Texas. Can you tell us a little about it?
My husband is from the Valley, as this part of Texas is affectionately called. When his dad became ill, he requested Beto come home. We did. The preserve/ranch we have is not where we actually live. It's a long distance from where his office was located..about 50 miles. He bought the ranch with the idea in mind to create a place were people could go to photograph wildlife without the land around changing. A place where the wildlife could live without man's intrusion. We could not have imagined how much people would enjoy our ranch.

What was the title of your first book? Synopsis in one paragraph?
My first book is titled Dancing with the Boss. In the American Southwest, criminal organizations from all over the world conspire to control everything from human trafficking to drug running and gun smuggling. Caught in the midst of all this is the smart and sassy Annie, the owner of a rare-art dealership in Arizona. In a chance encounter, Annie meets Tony, a veritable gangster and mafioso who finds the brutal nature of his work at odds with his growing feelings for Annie. But when Annie learns that her brother Allen, a former special ops agent for the FBI, has gotten himself into some deep trouble, she finds an unexpected ally in Tony.

Do you already have another book floating in your head? or on paper yet?
Whenever I am at a corner in my writing, and can't decide how to get around it, I work on something else. Consequently, I have several other projects on my MacBook Pro.

Does storytelling run in your family?
Storytelling was not in my family that I know of, however, my mother made certain we all had tons of reading material, although we were on a ranch miles from any library. Granted, I read, reread and reread again the books, but they were always there. After my mother died, I found a notebook with short, two verse poems. Just as she was, they are gentle.

Where have I found help?
I subscribe to several periodicals for writers. Although certainly not everything is useful, they do provide a great deal of information, both in the arena of doing the work itself and the arena of trying to get as clean a copy as possible before submission. Oh, and I'm sure everyone already knows this, but Google is a GREAT source for research.

How important is research?
As important as the story itself.

Don't give up. Keep typing, writing (I write on planes, in motels, etc) and talking. It does come together.

Predictable historical romance

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Come Winter is the story of Lady Caterina (referred to as Caty) and her journeys that begin in the Scottish highlands during the 18th century. The story was very repetitive. Caty was captured, fell in love with her captor, and escaped multiple times throughout the novel. This also made the story pretty predictable and somewhat boring. Being historical fiction, I was looking for more historical background to build the story and motivate the characters, but felt like this was lacking. What attracted me to the book was that Caty was described as a "healer" and therefore I thought witchcraft would have played a bigger role in the story than it did. Caty herself was a good, strong female character who overcomes terrible loss and rises to become queen, so one has to admire her for that. The pace was decent, just very repetitive. This book is definitely for those looking for a historical romance.

A multi-authored and comprehensive text, Genetic Algorithms in Molecular Modeling, enables professionals in QSAR and drug design to gain a thorough understanding of genetic algorithms (GAs) which are powerful search methods based on the mechanics of natural selection and genetics. The chapters are written in a clear, concise, and didactic style, and present different examples of real-life GA applications in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and applied chemistry.

About the Author
James Devillers is currently a Professor in Ecology, Zoology, Ecotoxicology, and Phytopathology at an Agricultural School of Graduate Engineers (ISARA) in Lyon, France,since 1983. Devillers is also a Professor in Environmental Chemistry at a Chemical School of Graduate Engineers (ICPI), and a Senior Lecturer in QSAR and Ecotoxicology for the Centre of Environmental Sciences (Metz), Private Institutes, and the EEC. He is also the President of the Centre de Traitement de l'Information Scientifique, which is a private company specializing in QSAR studies, drug design, statistical analysis, and data validation. Devillers has published many articles, six books, and is a member of various societies and institutions including: The International QSAR Society, the European Group for the QSAR Studies, the International Neural Network Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), the Societe d'Ecotoxicologie Fondamentale et Appliquee (SEFA), and the Societe Linneenne de Lyon (SLL). He is Editor-in-Chief of two journals: SAR and QSAR in Environmental Research (Gordon and Breach Science Publishers), and Toxicology Modeling (Carfax Publishing Company); as well as a series of books called Handbooks of Ecotoxicological Data (Gordon and Breach Science Publishers). Devillers is also a member of the editorial board of three journals, these are: Ecological Modelling (Elsevier), Xenobiotica (Taylor & Francis), and Journal of Biological Systems (World Scientific).
