In 1986, Ribeiro was sent to Punjab as Director General of Police, at the height of terrorist violence in the state. His stint there reinforced the hope of a turnaround in what appeared to be a lost situation, and how he accomplished this forms the high point of the book. Along the way, he also puts at rest the image created of him as a kind of Rambo patrolling the mean streets. Supercop he was, but one who never packed a gun. A personal, informed account.

Good insight into India's police system and inefficiencies

First off the good - the inside view of a cops life, issues of the police in general and the machinations of people in power. Also, Ribeiro comes off as a strong leader and master diplomat who is also a good police officer. Some of his insights into the nature of riots and the ways to control them are interesting.
The author could have used a ghost writer or a professional editor because the narrative sometimes jumps from one place to the other and repeats itself at different points. Overall though, a good read and one that has some valuable insights. I wish there was more information on his tackling of the gang menace in Bombay in the 80s.. again, a good co writer who could have asked the right questions would have been invaluable... I hope he writes another book!
