About the Author
Jay Friedenberg is Chair and Professor of the Psychology Department at Manhattan College, where he directs the Cognitive Science program. He obtained his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology in 1995 at the University of Virginia. He is interested in both vision and the philosophy of mind. He teaches courses in physiological psychology, learning and cognition, sensation and perception, and cognitive science. Dr. Friedenberg has published several articles on visual estimation of center of mass. His current research projects are investigating image statistics, picture perception, and the aesthetics of geometrical shapes. He has published books on artificial intelligence, chaos theory and psychology. He is a member of the Eastern Psychological Association, the Vision Science Society, The Psychonomic Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

Gordon Silverman is Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Manhattan College. His professional career spans more than 50 years of corporate, teaching, consulting, and research experience, during which he has developed a range of scientific instruments, particularly for use in physiological psychology research environments. He is the holder of eight patents, some related to behavior modification. The author of more than 20 journal articles and books, he has also served on the faculties of The Rockefeller University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Silverman’s current research interests include telemedicine, rehabilitation medicine, artificial intelligence, and biomedical instrumentation and modeling.

DO NOT USE THIS TEXTBOOK

What a horrible book. If you are a professor looking for a textbook for an interdisciplinary cognitive science class, absolutely DO NOT use this one. If you want to learn anything about the subject, DO NOT buy it. This horrible excuse for a textbook was written by a couple of psychologists who obviously don't know the first thing about philosophy, AI, computer science, or any of the other topics they attempt to address. An inordinately large amount of text is devoted to a complete history of psychology, while philosophical issues crucial to the field are given the short shrift.

Not only is the material in the book of reprehensible quality, it is presented in an embarrassingly slipshod manner. I can't imagine how a publisher could print this book and still respect themselves. The illustrations from the book consist of clip art and worse, and consistently look pixelly and distorted. As if it weren't bad enough that the material is second-rate, it's cheaply presented with useless and confusing diagrams and tables.

All in all, my undergraduate class could have put together a better text. Throughout the course we were consistently correcting and refuting the text. Our professor only ordered it for the class because he had not read it. This book is a waste of time, money, trees, effort, and space. Avoid it at all costs.

Excuse my language, but this book sucks

I totally agree with the previous negative review, so I'll just add my own disappointments here. I am currently taking a cognitive science course, and this is the textbook we're using. It's new this year, and I have a hunch it won't be on the menu for next semester.

It seems like at least a third of the text in this book is dedicated to sentences like this: "We have just now read [topic A], which was [description of topic A], and next we will cover topic B, and after that we'll cover topic C." This fluff/dust makes the book hard to read, and there is very little "meat" in between.

Here's an actual quote that made me laugh out loud this morning: (page 167)

"Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT). This technique was first developed in the 1970s. [short explanation of what it is, then new paragraph: ] Positron Emission Tomography (PET). This imaging proceedure (developed in the 1980s) was developed later than computerized axial tomography." Well, how about that, they even attempt to teach me about time: the 1980s came after the 1970s!!

Don't buy this book.

Great introductory book for an extremely interdisciplinary field

For the amount of material it covers, this is a great book. I read it cover to cover and I've kept even after finishing my intro to Cognitive Science course because it is straightforward and covers all of the basics of modern cognitive science. There is much more breadth to it than Thagard's book Mind: Introduction to Cognitive Science, and Gazzaniga's Methods in Mind (although those are great books, they're more specific and more suited for upper level classes or as a supplement ot this book). I don't think the one star reviews are valid assessments; my major is Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology (it's a single interdisciplinary major at my school)and coming from a program with a heavier emphasis on philosophy than most cognitive science and psychology majors, I think it's unfair to demand that an introductory book like this delve too deeply into that aspect of the material. This gives a cursory explanation of the philosophical debates going on, but ultimately there's way too much going on in philosophy of the mind to be adequately introduced in a book that's also supposed to be giving an overview of cognitive psychology and neuroscience. To be fair, the text can get repetitive because the structure is the same througout the book, but that didn't keep me from reading it when I was taking the class. As a plus, the publisher's website offers some flashcards and review questions for each chapter which really helped me study for exams. If I were a cognitive science professor I'd use this for my intro class over Thagard's or Gazzaniga's.

I sometimes feel like I have a dark beast inside of me, which causes me to search out reading material with darker thematic elements, things that skirt the edge of civilized and flirt with the more dangerously primal, instinctual and base urges that make us less human - or perhaps more human?

Writing Bait the Hook was a way for me to let my brain free and give in to those darker urges. It was a way to explore the predator and prey relationship as it pertains to men and women and sex. It is a deliciously dark flight of fancy between two sexual beings, on the prowl, who both believe that they are the hunter and not the prey. It is an exciting and thrilling game of cat and mouse, an intriguing battle of subtle seduction and gentle coercion, and a struggle for mental and sexual dominance between two strong adversaries.

About the Author
Kat Crimson uses her wit and wiles to infiltrate the minds of her characters, creating a new wave of Cerebral Erotica, which engages the brains, the hearts and the loins of her readers in equal measure, adding depth and dimension to what has, in the past,widely been considered to be a genre comprised only of talentless perverts. ~ Untrue ~

Kat Crimson, the writer of cerebral smut, has created this dark story of a guy with a penchant for stalking the shy, innocent type of girls in town. The main character is a wily girl who works in a shop that sells knives and is a kind of reverse stalker. To lure her man, she puts on a facade of timid and bashful, walks by him in her mind-fucking way of getting him to want to hunt her, and most certainly does stir his attention.

What follows is a series of rough, tension filled scenes with her flowing in and out of control over the situation. The result is a really hot sex scene and really hot book. Kat really focuses on the mental aspects of this relationship. If you like a strong cerebral component to a story, then she is one of your better writers.

Kat Crimson really got me going with this hot, quick read. It was a sexy little escape from my dreary day. It is a crazy game of cat and mouse. The heroine, Gemma tries to be all tough but goes weak in the knees for the hero. Who is the cat and who is the mouse? I can't wait to read more by this author.

WOAH! HOT!

Well... I finished this story in about an hour. I had ZERO idea of what Kat was capable of conjuring on the pages going into this. I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed.

Gemma goes into this knowing "I am the hunter and you are my prey." She knows this, she just has to entice Jackson into thinking the opposite, right??

Well, she gets her way... I agree with her, "This is so wrong I thought." Those are Gemma's thoughts and as it's happening, I'm thinking the VERY same thing. Yet, I'm not. Because it's exciting and titillating and... HOT.

VERY WELL DONE! I am an official fan from my very first read! Kat, I'm impressed. Miss Crimson, keep the stories coming!

Excellent Introduction

This was the first book I read in Formal Verification when I started my Ph.D. research in this area in 2001. The book was of great value to me and helped me a lot in coming up to speed in the field of Formal Verification. It is concise, well explained, and comprehensive. It covers formal hardware models, equivalence checking, model checking, symbolic model checking, and theorem proving. Although a lot of advances have happened in formal verification since the publication of this book, I still think it is the best place to start if you want to learn this area.

The book contains the concepts of the most recently researches in the area of formal hardware verification .I read a lot of journal publications, and I couldn't get the expected benefit from most of them, because they assume a high background in formal techniques. This book offers me the basic knowledge, that enable to get complete benefit from the other publications in this topic. The book also contains a lot of illustrative examples, and Figures that follow each section, and this make it easier to the reader.

This book presents each major area in Formal Hardware Verification in a chapter. The treatment is detailed and is based on clear mathematical foundations. I especially like the reachability analysis treatment in Chapter 3. However, I think that one of the weak points of this book is the lack of discussion on different "combinational equivalence checking" techniques.

Good insight into India's police system and inefficiencies

First off the good - the inside view of a cops life, issues of the police in general and the machinations of people in power. Also, Ribeiro comes off as a strong leader and master diplomat who is also a good police officer. Some of his insights into the nature of riots and the ways to control them are interesting.
The author could have used a ghost writer or a professional editor because the narrative sometimes jumps from one place to the other and repeats itself at different points. Overall though, a good read and one that has some valuable insights. I wish there was more information on his tackling of the gang menace in Bombay in the 80s.. again, a good co writer who could have asked the right questions would have been invaluable... I hope he writes another book!
