I was anxiously waiting the release of this devotional and this did not disappoint me. Sarah Young has a way with writing devotions as if it was Jesus speaking to us himself. I have every one of her devotionals and am thoroughly invested into this devotional and look forward to reading it every day. It is paired with the appropriate scripture and inspires me each day.

Mr. Manahan is a financial strategist, change expert and educator. During his successful career as a financial executive and consultant Mr. Manahan has helped companies raise in excess of $250 million. Mr. Manahan has worked with more than 100 management teams, as an external consultant or advisor, and as a member of the management team. He has held the position of chief financial officer for four companies, including three publicly traded companies and a division of a multi-billion dollar furniture manufacturer. He has held senior finance positions in a number of other companies. Mr. Manahan has more than 30 years of financial, executive, organizational and strategic management experience with a diverse group of companies operating in such sectors as real estate development, industrial distribution, consumer and industrial services, computer software, Internet, healthcare, food manufacturing, entertainment, energy, furniture manufacturing and consumer products. Further, Mr. Manahan has assisted companies in structuring and completing joint ventures, acquisitions, divestitures, financings and reorganizations, as well as coaching companies through the pre-IPO stage. Mr. Manahan has extensive experience in SEC reporting, corporate finance, public markets, investor relations and corporate development. The Secrets to Raising Capital is very insightful and easy to read

The Secrets to Raising Capital is very insightful and easy to read. I had to read it as part of an optional assignment for a college course, and since I don't like to read much, I was kind of dreading it. I started reading it and I found it real world examples very interesting so I was able to read it pretty quickly. I know a company needs to have a business plan in order to raise capital, but I didn't realize there are so many other things that are taken into consideration by the money guys.
One of the concepts explained by the author that stood out to me was the idea of a "snapshot" of the business plan. I had not really considered this, and it seems, from his examples, that many other entrepreneurs also neglect this idea. The author recommends entrepreneurs have a "two pager" and a "pitch." The two pager is a two page summary of your business plan which is meant to get money sources interested. The pitch would be an oral version of the summary designed to provide a quick idea and entice the investor to go to the next step.
A snapshot could be a way to get your "foot in the door" with an investor. It seems like the money guys are usually pretty busy and not willing to take the time to read a lengthy business plan without any previous knowledge. However, by having a summary that only takes up 5 minutes of their time, they may be inclined to read your full business plan and meet with you for more details assuming your summary has peeked their interest.
An example which I found very interesting, was the retired airline pilot who had developed a business concept relating to aviation. I thought it was crazy that first he wanted you to sign a non disclosure agreement at a bar, but even crazier was that he would not summarize his business idea and instead was asking for 45 minutes to an hour. A business owner who requires an hour to describe his business is going to have a really hard time raising capital.

To me the useful part of this book is the chapter "Let the ...

The book emphasized on the steps of how to raise money by pitching your business plan to the money guys. An effective business plan should not be too short or too long but just enough detail that explains the company's business, its competitive advantages, and why the company will be successful. To me the useful part of this book is the chapter "Let the Show Begin" which discussed the presentation that is given to the corporate big wigs. Once the business plan is drafted, a two-pager is completed, pitch is ready, and the power point is set, then the presentation needs to be given. Practice is an important aspect in the book. In order to give an effective speech one must practice their presentation which keeps the presenter from being distracted because they have to look at their power point slides or note cards. In turn the presenter will be able to give eye contact to the audience. Eye contact with the audience builds trust and shows professionalism especially when you are trying to get funding for your business from investors.
Being prepared for anything will make your presentation effective. The presenter should be ready for any malfunction that can happen or ready to field questions from the Wall Street kid, the Questionator, or the I'm the Man. These individuals are meant to distract you from your presentations point but the presenter should handle these individuals with caution and tactic. Questions these individuals may have should be answered on the spot or politely inform them that you will answer their questions at the end of you presentation. Overall this book was extremely informative but this chapter seemed to be the most important because the presentation is what will make or break the presenter from moving forward in the process of seeking funding.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Secrets to Raising Capital: How to get the money you need for your business the fastest and easiest way possible This book contains concepts and strategies taught at a university for business students. It discusses topics such as how to find investors, to creating a successful business plan, what not to say to potential investors and how to come up with marketing strategies. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring entrepreneurs. I feel like it definitely provides a lot of insight that is really eye opening and easy to digest. In other words, the concepts are so interesting that they are fairly easy to comprehend and follow.

I really liked the chapter ¨A wolf in sheep's clothing¨ because for those who don't know, the original phrase is ¨a wolf in sheep's clothing¨ which depicts the fact that in order to get what you want, In this case a wolf wants to hunt the sheep and so he disguises himself as a sheep to blend in to in efforts of ultimately getting what he wants. This chapter has a similar concept which is to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing because as an aspiring entrepreneur one has to be a wolf. A wolf is always on the hunt while a sheep follows the heard. A wolf must imitate a sheep in other words the entrepreneur must follow customer fads and trends in order to make sales and have a successful business that is constantly creating capital.

Another idea I that particularly stood out was ¨A Rare Find.¨ which in my opinion actually somehow ties in which the chapter I previously talked about ¨A wolf in sheep's clothing¨. Reason being is the fact that the author discusses that having a unique business will potentially turn investors away because investors are trying to maximize their investments so having a unique business isn’t necessarily going to persuade investors to fund your business because they don't want to compromise themselves to such a big risk. A safer risk would be to follow the current trends so that investors can rest assured that the business idea is already a success and all that is necessary is to have a better strategy than your competition.

About the Author
Daniel Bar-Tal is the Branco Weiss Professor of Research in Child Development and Education at Tel-Aviv University. His primary research interests are political and social psychology, particularly the socio-psychological foundations of intractable conflicts and peace building. Professor Bar-Tal is the recipient of a number of major awards, including the Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Prize of SPSSI, the Golestan Fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Peace Scholar Award of the Peace and Justice Studies Association and the 2011 Lasswell Award and 2012 Nevitt Sanford Award of the International Society of Political Psychology. He has published widely in the areas of conflict and peace studies. His 2005 book Stereotypes and Prejudice in Conflict, co-authored with Yona Teichman, received the Alexander George Award from the International Society of Political Psychology.

An excellent book about an excellent black trial lawyer

Vilified and maligned since the shocking O.J. verdict, the high profile lawyer, Johnnie Cochran, Jr., member of the famed :"Dream Team" sets the record straight in his new book, Journey to Justice, co-authored with Tim Rutten. In this book, we learn a lot about Johnnie Cochran the man, his passion and committment. We learn more about his deep family ties, religious conviction, and sense of justice, which led him to take such high profile cases, from Leonard Deadwyler, a black motorist stopped for speeding to the hospital with his pregnant, then shot dead, to the black football star Ron Settles, who was murdered by the police in an apparent attempt to make his death look like a suicide. Those looking for a lot of details on the O.J case would be well advised to steer clear of this book, but those who want to learn more about the life of one of the finest trial lawyers in America will not be disappointed

Justice Prevailed

"Journey to Justice" was much more than I expected. I expected a lenghthy book with Johnny Cochran just "telling" about his life. But actually he didn't just "tell" his descriptions of everything in the story from his hometown church to the first case he ever lost. Everything was so descriptive. I got vivid pictures in my head about his whole life. He also had lots of life lessons in almost every new topic. He shows that it takes time and patience if one wants to become successful in like and that is exactly what he has done. I didn't think that his writing style was going to be that great but it wasn't half bad. Another thing I loved about "Journey to Justice" is that he recognizes key people in history and key events. That keeps one involved in the story. But one thing is though sometimes it seems like he gave information that didn't seem needed. Other than that the book is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone who is intrested in African American men who have made history.

THE LEAD DEFENSE ATTORNEY RECOUNTS HIS CAREER---CULMINATING IN THE SIMPSON ACQUITTAL

In the first part of this 1996 book, lead defense attorney Johnnie Cochran recounts his long history as a lawyer—including time as an Assistant District Attorney, and his often admirable work securing monetary compensation for family members of persons harmed/killed by excessive force used by the LAPD. He doesn’t even get to O.J. Simpson until about page 200 (of the 373-page paperback edition).

Of his relationship with his first wife (that was brought out by the media during the Simpson trial), he says, “As bad as our relationship became, physical violence never played a part in it. I never at any time physically struck Barbara Cochran, as I have never struck any woman in my life. We separated and reconciled repeatedly.” (Pg. 96)

After he accepted Simpson’s plea to join the defense team, he recalls, “O.J. has always maintained his innocence, from his first tape-recorded call … to the day of the verdicts… I must say that I have never told anyone, friend or foe, that I believe O.J. is guilty or that he should plead guilty to a lesser charge.” (Pg. 207)

He says of the detectives investigating the case, “[Mark] Fuhrman … had made the first thorough investigation of the murder scene, pinpointing many key items of evidence. He was unwatched and unsupervised for various periods of time… At Rockingham, it was Fuhrman, again alone, who claimed to have spotted minute traces of blood on O.J.’s white Ford Bronco… It was quite a night for an ambitious young West Side detective who had been rebuffed in repeated attempts to gain admission into the elite Robgbery-Homicide Unit to which both [Tom] Lange and [Philip] Vannatter belongs… Once they began to uncover evidence of Fuhrman’s dubious past, his role moved from the merely puzzling to the possibly sinister.” (Pg. 219)

Of fellow defense attorney Robert Shapiro’s interviews in which he hinted of Fuhrman’s racist views, he comments, “One of the consequences … was that important witnesses with firsthand knowledge of Fuhrman’s racist inclinations came forward… during my first weeks on the case, Shapiro several times smugly recounted the whole sequence as further evidence of his dexterity in handling the media. But fifteen months later, when Bob Shapiro accused the rest of us of ‘dealing the race card,’ he had conveniently forgotten that he was the one who first shuffled the deck.” (Pg. 220)

He asserts, “you have Detectives Tom Lange and Phil Vannatter…. they fixed immediately on O.J. Simpson as their suspect and simply ignored anything that might have deflected them in another… direction. Having rushed to that judgment, Vannatter decided to ‘improve the case,’ to make sure things came out the way he thought they should… Detective Mark Fuhrman was something else entirely… He was a living remnant of the LAPD’s dark past, and active, vocal, hate-filled bigot whose violent---even murderous---impulses were, by his own account, barely under control. Lange and Vannatter… thought Fuhrman was an unstable troublemaker, and privately derided him… But… he somehow managed to touch nearly every significant piece of evidence that conveniently assisted the two senior detectives in their rush to link O.J. Simpson to the murders.” (Pg. 239-240)

Of co-prosecutor Chris Darden, he says, “As a beneficiary of the civil rights struggles waged by previous generations, Chris Darden seemed to me to be one of those young blacks who had had the luxury of assimilating the narcissism so common among Americans of his age… As I was about to discover, Chris Darden’s reticence in the Stephens case apparently reflected a much deeper emotional distress then I had suspected.” (Pg. 244) During the trial, he noticed, “Marcia [Clark], I could see, was simply wearing down under the strain of an unsettled personal life. Darden’s temper was wearing thinner. We began to look for ways to exploit that…” (Pg. 261)

After defense counsel F. Lee Bailey goaded Darden [‘you’ve got the b__s of a stud field mouse’] into having Simpson try on the gloves, and Simpson pretended to have difficulty getting them on, he commented, “It was one of the worst humiliations I have ever seen a prosecutor suffer in front of a jury. Darden had allowed himself to be bullied into making the mistake every first-year law student is warned not to make: Never ask a question to which you do not know the answer or conduct an experiment of which you don’t know the results… It was, I told my jubilant colleagues back at the office that night, perhaps ‘the most expensive piece of remedial legal education I’d ever seen.’ They all laughed and laughed again when someone quipped that, all things considered, ‘Darden has helped the defense more than Shapiro.’” (Pg. 262)

Of his infamous comparison (in his summation) of Fuhrman to Hitler and the Holocaust, he states, “Based upon conversations with several witnesses who have been inside Mark Fuhrman’s house, I believe that he is a brown-shirt wearing Nazi who collects and proudly displays Nazi memorabilia. While this analogy was relevant, it was never my intention to offend anyone.” (Pg. 306)

Later, he adds, “In connection with this ‘race card’ issue, I also have to say something about the incident that was, for me, the most painful of the entire trial. That was the accusation that by comparing Mark Fuhrman to Adolf Hitler in my final argument, I trivialized the Shoah or Holocaust. I never intended to suggest the Fuhrman’s perjury was morally… comparable to the genocidal crimes of the Third Reich. Fuhrman did express a desire to bomb and burn all black people, and even an admiration for the Nazis through the acquisition of their memorabilia. He was, as the tapes incontrovertibly demonstrated, also an anti-Semite. I never suggested nor do I believe, however, that Fuhrman and Hitler were the same. I have been to Yad Vashem. No one goes away from that unchanged. But I do continue to believe that the authoritarian impulse that lurks in the Mark Fuhrmans in our police forces is essentially authoritarian.” (Pg. 319)

Cochran’s effectiveness as a defense counsel is undoubted. (I’ve sometimes suggested to his critics, “Would you be glad to have him defending someone that YOU love?”) But his inflammatory remarks to the public and the press outside of the courtroom were (at the very least) ill-advised, and tarnished his legacy as a defender of those who had been harmed. He died at age 67 of a brain tumor.

Combining selections from her two previous volumes as well as new and unpublished poems, Begin Again is the work of a seasoned literary veteran but also that of a lifelong bur under the establishment's saddle. A teacher, activist, and National Book Award-winning master of the short story form, Paley fashions poems as terse as haiku but as direct and earthy as a note to a friend--which, in fact, several of these seem to be. Here are poems about milkweed pods, Saint John's wort, bees, and ants, as well as poems about El Salvador, Vietnam, and AIDS. Paley (Enormous Changes at the Last Minute) has stood for decades among America's most cherished short-story writers. Her poems retain the winning openness, the whimsy and the political commitments her fiction flaunts. They also contain deep insights about narrative and voice: "A Poem about Storytelling" explains, "the first person is often the lover who/ says I never knew anyone like you/ The listener is the beloved She whispers/ Who? Me?" The poems can carry her readers through the poet's traumas, astonishments, and exclamations: when she says "Oh! the five exogamous boroughs of/ our beloved home New York," that adjective invites her readers to love it too. Poems address locales in New York City and Vermont; consider generational succession and old age; advocate an energetic acceptance of difference and diversity; and dwell on particular political struggles. (Some of the poems about Vietnam and El Salvador stick perhaps too closely to their occasions.) Her cadences and preoccupations can suggest a much slighter, and sunnier, Adrienne Rich. But in contrast to Rich, much of Paley's poetry seems unfinished, jotted-down rather than carefully made. Her lines give revelations without contexts, theses without examples, ends and beginnings without their middles: the poem "Life" reads, in its entirety: "Some people set themselves tasks/ other people say do anything only live/ still others say/ oh oh I will never forget you event of my first life." And too many lines become unadorned tracts: "It is the responsibility of the poet not to pay war taxes." Fans of the fiction will want these unguarded looks at the illimitably appealing Paley persona. And even those not already charmed by Paley's prose ought to enjoy her few best poems: an account of "twenty-two tranvestites/ in joyous parades" on Mother's Day; the superbly constructed, vertiginous "Leaflet"; the heartbreaking "On the Deck," about old age; a six-line apocalypse called "psalm." While this volume of Paleys poetry contains new, unpublished work, it might well be termed a retrospective insofar as it traces the writers poetic career through four previous collections, the first from back in 1985, with poems of even earlier vintage included. Though perhaps better known for her short prose and essays, one compilation of which (The Collected Stories), was a finalist for the 1994 NBA, Paley has gradually expanded her repertoire into verse. Born in the Bronx and educated in New York public schools, she makes use of these influences in a style that is often coarse and gutsy yet always compassionate and frequently leavened with humor. Later poems include wonderfully evocative images of the writers adoptive home in rural Vermont. A popular lecturer and workshop leader, Paley has taught at Sarah Lawrence, Columbia, Dartmouth, and City College, and her involvement in the peace movement and in feminist causes over the past four decades, arising in part from a history of activism in her family, often burbles to the surface. At times, in fact, were fairly inundated by it, as when she enumerates rocket, bomb, and napalm attacks on a Vietnamese village in a bludgeoning manner few poets of the time managed to avoid. Shes in top form, however, when she sets aside the intellectual polemics and observes quietly. In one poem she describes a Vietnamese child speaking to his father who, unhearing, remains engrossed in the mosaic of three ships on the wall of a Brooklyn subway station. The poetry in this book is a gift. I borrowed this book from the library, but it is now on my Christmas list.

The totality of Grace Paley's life's work is to be lauded. So many hats and a deep commitment to essential values that are ennobling. The poetry, however, is rather ordinary, the surprises few, though the granular level of observation can be, from time to time, revelatory.
