It is too expensive, however. Also, this book hasn't changed in decades so if you can find a cheaper used version I would get that instead.

A must for any artist

I've never encountered such a precise simple book on composition. When I was in art school, we experimented with composition with our teacher saying "just draw shapes". It was very frustrating because I didn't know why certain shapes worked and others didn't, and so I never got anywhere. For years I struggled with composition and knew something had to be done about it. After reading this book, I finally understand composition! When you first open it it looks so simple you get worried you already know everything in it, but Molly explains everything so perfectly, showing you both examples of what works and what doesn't, and most importantly, why. There are also exercises at the very end of the book to put your knowledge to the test. This book should be mandatory in any art major!

graphically teaches you what it means to tell a story graphically only using things like size composition and shade. mostly only using the same principles. It's great the way it shows examples or these techniques while using them.

Many other books on at go on and on trying to put thinks into worlds. this book uses pictures and graphics to tell you a story while at eh same time you see the decisions and thought process being made while telling you this story. kinda like watching a movie about making a movie. it's not like you read and then heres examples or read and maybe you can see how this works in practice. it's really effective and all there.

at the point I read this book I've done art for a while and though I knew composition. and I did. thats what this book was recommended to me as. but I find it to more about storytelling and how elements you never thought of like composition can be a great storytelling tool. and how graphically with out the superficial elements like drawing a good drawing of say a wolf in this cause. just using framing and position to communicate the story and feeling you clearly want to create.

I love this book, because it best illustrates a fundamental core skill every artist needs.

Elegant, simple, visual understanding of artistic composition.

I am constantly searching for better ways to understand photographic composition, not only so that I can take better photographs in the field/in camera but so that I can make good editing decisions in the digital darkroom. So when a photographer recommended this book I jumped on the opportunity and I'm very happy that I did. Molly Bang's "Picture This: How Pictures Work" is a fantastic resource for any creative person trying to get a better understanding of visual dynamics.

The frist thing I did when I got the book was to simply look at the pictures -- even without reading the text the graphics tell the story of how to create a more visually dynamic image and story. So if you are interested in understanding how lines create tension, the impact of negative space, tonal relations, and getting a better understanding of color and emotional relationships/reaction I heartily recommend this simple little book. If you want to get a better understanding of what "draws your eye" or to get a handle on "seeing" rather than simply "looking" then check out this book.

An approachable way to get beyond just simple Python scripting

Python is famous for being a 'glue' language that people use to write scripts piecing together other pieces of code, but it's readability really lends itself well to being used for larger projects. That said, unless you're a programmer coming from another language (most object oriented books target either Java or C++/C#) who already has a solid base in creating projects in an OO way, you're likely to only know the syntax (creating classes, instances) for it, and possibly wonder what the fuss is. It's hard to find a Python book that has more than a quick chapter on OO, when in fact creating an OO program from analysis and design to implementation is far more than knowing the keywords. If you're one of those who learned how to program in Python from the tutorial (and possibly only learned programming in Python), this is the book to get to help move you along with some practical tips and exercises. Unlike a couple other reviewers, I paid for my copy, and just for the way it made things click for me, I'd recommend it.

Great OOP for Python developers

I can't claim to have looked hard for a Python book on object oriented programming (OOP) but I was immediately attracted to the title of this book. Sure, you can find small tutorials here and there about some specific facet of OOP but I don't recall ever reading something that covers designing public interfaces using abstraction, encapsulation, etc, etc with good and practical examples! If you have, please drop me a link in the comments.

I've always felt that anyone can pick up a book about programming and learn its syntax by heart. But putting it all together and designing something that will actually work is something that you usually learn by reading other people's code or, if you're lucky enough, from a mentor.
Overall I felt that the book was well written with a great selection of sample code. Whether you already know how to do object oriented programming for other languages or are new to the whole concept and want to learn everything about it, I definitely recommend this book!

Great book on Python OO, but...

First, the good: this is a fine place to get into the nitty gritty of object oriented programming in Python. The author really knows his stuff, and it's quite apparent in the book. This book would be one of the first that would come to mind if someone was looking for a reference for how Python handles Object Oriented programming.

Unfortunately, I'm starting to think Packt publishing can't create a coherent book. Case in point: Chapters 8 and 9 talk about Design Patterns. These are slightly more advanced topics than the normal fare of the rest of the book. However, Chapter 10 begins discussing Files and Strings. What? Shouldn't that have been covered more in the front of the book? Then Chapter 11 puts in an obligatory Test Driven Development chapter, only to close out with Chapter 12's look at some other libraries in Python 3.

Up until Chapter 10, this book feels like a solid and coherent whole. Had someone put chapter 10 more towards the front of the book, this would be approaching the five star mark.

One part that I particularly had trouble with were the decorators as explained in the book. Maybe it was me making them harder than they needed to be, but a little more explanation would have set me off in the right direction.

This isn't to say that this is a bad book. I applaud Dusty for making a book about a singular topic with Python 3 that is readable, and very thorough. This is a great book. I just wish that Packt could make a tighter book that didn't feel like it was padded out to fill a page count.

You must pay for her instructions

I got this book as solar water distillation was something I had never heard of. I had plans to make a solar distiller after reading the book. I am not the type of person that can construct something by looking at photos of it with a list of what was used, especially when the wood the glass sits on has to be cut on an angle for correct drainage. If you need step by step instructions with measurements, she has the information, but requires that you purchase it. The book is written by a cultural anthropologist that has done a lot of work with solar in poor areas near the border of the US and Mexico. She admits that the book goes off on a tangent about the colonias where she worked. Many photos and information about the area. You have to read most of the book before she starts talking about the construction of stills. She has a large amount of information on what supplies to use to construct it safely, including the correct type of silicone caulk to use. The silicone comes in contact with the water so it has to be safe. It can be purchased on Amazon. She says not to use PVC pipe, but CPVc and explains why. I learned about constructing stills safely, but would be unable to construct one from the information in this book. I learned enough by reading this book to know it is an area I want to learn more about. I would recommend this book to anyone planning on building a solar water distiller so you can learn about the safe way to do it.

The book contains 'facts' which are unproven

The book contains a lot of useful information but also many mistakes in grammar and facts. Many of the facts are simply opinions - anecdotal at best - such as the "fact" that bottled distilled water is acidic! The "fact" that plastic bottles contaminate water. The fact that shaking a bottle of water will "oxygenate it" (air is principally nitrogen). "Some people believe that..." No links to evidential proof are provided.
