A Very Useful, Informative and Practical Grammatical Lexicon

As the preface to this edition indicates, this Grammar is designed for the literary student of English as opposed to the student of philology. Thus, the emphasis is on practical issues of the language. In other words, it eschews lengthy and digressive forays into the history or context of certain linguistic developments (though it does touch on certain essential matters) and focuses instead on the issues most pertinent to one who wishes to begin mastering the basics and intermediate elements of the language, such as inflexions, cases, syntactical issues. One does not need to bring a broad basis of linguuistic training/experience to bear; but one should keep in mind that it is presented like a traditional lexicon one might encounter in Latin or Greek, i.e., no handholding through the practical elements of the language - nor is it riddled with practice sentences or parallel examples in ModE. For those, however, who want to undertake a rigorous and systematic study of the basics of OE, this is a very handy and practical Grammar reference with which to begin such an endeavor.

Not for those unaquainted with the Old English language

This is not the most well-organized Old English Grammar in existence, but it does serve a certain purpose. There is a wealth of information and interesting tid-bits of philological lore, but it is not an introduction to the language by any means (just a warning). Those who do have an understanding of the language would do well to own it, at least for reference purposes, but there are much better and more concise grammars available.

Excellent Theme Concept, Not So Great Execution

I enjoy reading James Altucher and appreciate his sensibilities. I even corresponded with him briefly a few years ago, and appreciated his input on some writing I showed him. The theme of this book immediately caught my attention because I'm in a situation where I recently sold my own online business and concurrently took a job related to the deal, whereby I am once again a salaried employee after nearly 20 years of entrepreuneurship and solo consulting. With soon to be college-age kids at home, this was the right move for now, and it's nice that James addressed the notion that being in business for yourself is not necessarily the end-all and be all for a fulfilled life.

I'm going to be a little bit critical, though, with 3 stars (not worthless, but short of greatness!) by saying that the book seems a bit rushed both technically (typos, rough phrasing) and content-wise, where it seems that James is pulling in a grab-bag of self-help thoughts and ideas, which in some cases are contradictory and inconsistent. For example, in one section, he says it's "easy to caught up in ego..." etc. as a caution and in another "Ego. A real belief that you can be the best..." as foundation of persistence.

James likes to say that he doesn't give advice, just talks about what works or worked for him. Then why drag in all sorts of random advice and examples which don't fill out the theme, in my opinion, and seem wholely derivative in their presentation.

Recently on a long-drive for work I listened to James and Claudia interview Michael Singer, which for me was one of the most inspiring podcasts he's done - I had never heard of Singer, but I've listened now to that podcast multiple times and read his books because of that. For me, the inner journey is what "choosing yourself" is all about. If you can get past the clutter of your mind and the crazy externals, answers come. But much of this book just recycles trite bromides and success tales in a narrative that is a bit incoherent.

Finally, James' branding of "Choose Yourself" as the basis for yet another ambitious self-help enterprise is a bit off-putting, and the cynical part of me sees him entering that mutually admiring, inner circle of "famed" millionaires and billionaires who for all their accomplishments are not that interesting. They all love to interview one another! "Choose Yourself (R)" has arrived, and as the last section of the book outlines, you can form a local group - and they have formed - to spread the gospel. I don't mean to sound snarky, but that was my reaction. It's probably all good!

Anyway, I hope James can maintain originality and fresh insights in his ongoing writing and interviews - I'll stay tuned. Peace!

Don't waste your time. I generally enjoy Altucher's stuff, but this feels like something he wrote and published for the sake of writing and publishing it just so he could sell you a book telling you how easy it is to write and publish your own book.

I couldn't finish it. He encourages being a suck up at your job. I respect my bosses and co workers, but I am not going to stroke someone's ego. This is not the book for me.

Ira Lapidus is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout his long and illustrious career he has published extensively. This was a great read, but my Kindle version was flawed by a random appearance of fat parentheses in many of the words, which created a stumbling block in reading this dense work. I still have no idea what some of the words are supposed to be, since they are both Arabic and parenthetical!

Very good introduction to JavaScript & using it.

The book's title undersells it a little. The first chapter is a solid, concise introduction to using the language, and is followed by a series of chapters that each bring the reader into a better understanding of how to use both JavaScript and programming concepts in general. I see this book as a good companion for teaching Computer Science II level material in JavaScript. The examples are straightforward and logical, as are the explanations. It's hard to find fault with the book's approach to teaching because there's so little chaff to complain about. It simply teaches you what you need to know, which I found very refreshing.

Overall, while the book isn't positioned as the be-all and end-all of understanding the JavaScript language, it is an overall excellent introduction to the language and implementing data structures in it.

Excellent Data structure book. Missing Chapter.

Excellent resource into data structures from the JS point of view. Very clear and easy to follow examples for each data structure. What I like best about this book is that the data structures are associated to real examples. If you're having a hard time understanding data structure or if you want to simply get your foot into the Algo space AND have JS experience start here. One issue, and the reason I brought it down to 4 stars, was the missing Chapter 11. The book refers to the chapter but is not present. It seems that chapter was going to go into big O notation.

Great Price, Excellent Presentation, and Straight to the Point

This book is one of my favorite algorithm texts. It gets straight to the point providing you with examples of how the data structure or algorithm can be used and application of the algorithm in JavaScript. If you are studying algorithms in school, you're probably using the Cormen text or possibly Sedgewick's or Kleinberg's. Definitely recommend using this as a supplement for those texts.

If you're not taking an algorithm class and want to see how to implement common data structures and algorithms in JavaScript, or you're looking to brush-up for a job interview, or you have some JavaScript background and want to improve your skills, definitely pick this up! The price is great as well.

The Literary Warrior

I agree with the previous reviewer that the editing could be improved, but what publisher these days bothers to treat its authors and their readers properly? This generations Maxwell Perkinses are busy schmoozing new authors, not perfecting the works of the writers they already have.

That said, this book is very valuable, discussing how writers can capture the personalities of warriors, heroes, victims, survivors and villains other participants in warfare. He devotes a chapter to each of the types of participants listed above and within each chapter, five or six subchapters each devoted to a single character from literature, from Homer's Achilles to Fraser's Flashman, using each character to highlight aspects of the subject. He manages to cram a lot of information and insight into a very readable book. There are characters (and maybe even categories) one misses - I would have loved to read the author's views on Colonel Nichols from James Gould Cozzens' Guard of Honor, but he was a moral hero more than a physical one, so I don't know where Mr. Coker would have placed him.

Mr. Coker's judgments are, to my mind, sound, even where I don't agree with him. There is only one point on which I strongly disagree. Like me, Mr. Coker doesn't think Catch-22 is great literature, although he subscribes to the anti-war message of the book, which makes him a little more tolerant of the World War II setting of an anti-war novel. There is a particular character in Catch-22 whom I find to be particularly disturbing, an old Italian peasant who argues with Nately about the senselessness of war. He tells Nately (with Yossarian looking on) that it doesn't matter who wins wars, that he was sitting on his doorstep when the Germans moved in and that he was sitting on his doorstep when they moved out. Like all critics who want to like the book, Mr.Coker calls the peasant "cynical," but that is not how the character is written at all. He is the moral center of the book. Nately argues until he is blue in the face and the peasant gets the best of him. If the peasant had merely pointed out that he was not Jewish and therefore was not hauled away by the Nazis to a death camp, then he would obviously appear to the reader as cynical and Catch-22 might have been more compelling than propaganda for high school freshmen. When Joseph Heller failed to make that point about the necessity of war, his book became morally repugnant.

Don't let that cavil put you off this book, however. It has some thoughtful things to say about war and also introduces or reintroduces the reader to a number of great works of literature.
