Following the St. Germain-en-Laye Treaty of March 29, 1632, it was by order of Cardinal Richelieu (Minister of State to King Louis XIII), that Commander Isaac de Razilly came to re-occupy the colony; so, too, did Germain Doucet (Sieur de La Verdure), the progenitor of this author’s family, accompany him. Sailing from France on July 4, 1632, they arrived with a variety of livestock, seeds, tools, implements, arms, munitions, and other supplies, at La Have (LaHève), located at the mouth of the La Have River in present day Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, on September 8. In keeping with the forced Deportation of the French Acadian people, the family of Joseph Doucet and Anne Surette were exiled from Port Royal, to Massachusetts, on December 4, 1755. After a few weeks in Boston, they were assigned to the town of Gloucester in County Essex. Less than ten years later, Joseph is listed on a petition, to the Governor of Massachusetts, dated August 24, 1763, seeking permission, together with one hundred seventy-nine families, to return to Old France, which was not to be. Several years later, a second attempt was made. On February 8, 1766, one hundred forty-seven families (a total of eight hundred ninety souls), including Joseph Doucet, asked for permission to leave Massachusetts, in order to return to Canada; as before, they were unable to leave. It was during the following year, 1767, that the Acadians petitioned Governor Franklin of Nova Scotia for land on which to settle. As they were Roman Catholic, they could not be granted land. The Governor, however, allotted them land, along the shore of Baie Sainte-Marie (today known as St. Mary’s Bay) on December 23, 1767. Joseph Doucet spent the first winter at Annapolis Royal (formerly Port Royal, his original home). With land surveyed in 1768, the township of Clare was laid out along Baie Sainte-Marie. Joseph Doucet settled near what is today called Church Point. The records show that, after completing the necessary requirements, he was granted title to Lot 58 (103 acres), in the township of Clare, on May 18, 1775, living there for the rest of his life, as both fisherman and farmer. Several of his sons, namely Joseph, Charles, Jean Magloire and Michel, settled further south in Yarmouth County, the area of this author’s roots.

Over the last twenty years or so there has been a sharp increase in interest from national sports federations and governments in the development of effective elite sport systems, particularly focused on achieving success in the summer and winter Olympic Games. Many countries now have publicly funded elite sports strategies which provide specialist facilities and support staff and often provide direct financial support for athletes. These developments have stimulated academic interest in describing the elite sport systems, analysing the processes by which policy is established and evaluating the impact of these policies on elite athlete success. Far less attention has been placed on the operation of the elite sports systems and on how the system interfaces with the athlete. The aim of this book is to refocus attention on the management and operation of systems designed to deliver elite success.

The book draws on the theoretical literature in implementation, organisation theory, leadership and complexity. This provides an initial context for analysis and a stimulus for theory development around key questions such as:

How do coaches manage their relationship with athletes?

How does talent identification operate in practice?

Do coaches fulfil the role of gatekeeper between the athlete and other elements of the sports system e.g. sports science support?

How do managers, support staff and athletes interpret the expectations placed on them?

The first part of the book focuses on aspects of the effectiveness of elite sports systems and the second explores aspects of systems operation focused on the interface between the athlete and the sport development system, and cross-cutting themes within the book include the management of talent identification and coach development. This is illuminating reading for any student, researcher or practitioner working in sport development, sport management or sports coaching.

Svein S. Andersen is a professor of organization studies at BI Norwegian Business School, and adjunct professor at the Centre for Training and Performance, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. He has been director for Centre for EU Research, University of Oslo, and chair of the Department of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour at Norwegian Business School

Lars Tore Ronglan is associate professor at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and currently vice rector at the same institution. He has been Head of Research at the Centre of Training and Performance in Oslo and was recently elected as vice rector at Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Ronglan has been assistant coach for the Norwegian national handball team, and has been involved as a consultant in various projects with the Handball Association and also the Norwegian elite sport organization Olympiatoppen

Barrie Houlihan is Professor of Sport Policy in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, UK and also Visiting Professor at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Oslo. This book is excellent. All topics are fully explained in a relaxed, conversational style. Many clear, fully worked examples supplement the reading. The topics are well organized. There is a definite "and here is where this is used in practice" and "here is the important concept to remember" tone throughout the book that is very helpful. I highly recommend this text to both students and those who are learning on their own.

Excellent book

I have been reading about spectral estimation lately and accidentally found this book. I looked through the rest of the book which looks quite reader friendly but really got me was chapter 10 on Power Spectral density. This seemingly simple subject is really quite confusing what with deterministic signals, random ones, periodogram and correlogram and then many variants both parametric and non-parametric. They derive an equivalence between the periodogram and the correlation method showing exactly when that is so. The authors do a superb job, the best I have seen on the topic. Very impressive book.

This is one of the worst texts I've had to use in my 6 years of engineering education. There are almost no relevant examples in this book and the homework problems stray far from the material in the text. Many fundamental steps are glossed over or skipped, leaving the student without the intuition to solve problems that stray from the norm.

This book looks at the simultaneous processes of making and un-making of families that are part of the adoption practice. Whereas most studies on transnational adoption concentrate on the adoptive family, the author identifies not only the happy occasion when a family gains a child, but also the sorrow and loss of the child to its family of origin. Situating transnational adoption in the context of the Global North-South divide, Högbacka investigates the devastating effects of unequal life chances and asymmetrical power relations on the adoption process and on the mothers whose children are adopted.

Based on unique primary material gathered in in-depth interviews with South African families of origin and Finnish adoptive families, the book investigates the decision-making processes of both sets of parents and the encounters between them. The first mothers’ narratives are juxtaposed with those of the adopters and of the adoption social workers who act on the principles of the wider adoption system. Concluding with a critique of the Global Northism that exemplifies current practices, Högbacka sketches the contours of a more just approach to transnational adoption that would shatter rather than perpetuate inequality. The book can also be read as an exposé of the consequences of current inequalities for poor families.
