Great adventure that stays with you.

OK, I'm 42, and here's my book report.
I read this book the first time back in about 1968. I can still remember dreaming about holing up in a tree house on a mountain somewhere while a great blizzard decends, the wind howling through the tree limbs. And surviving off the wilderness, trapping deer and fishing, hiding out from grownups. It was a tremendous adventure that has stayed with me through the years.
I recently bought this book for my 8-year old boy, but he's still pouring through the Harry Potter series (again), so I re-read it. It's still tremendous after all these years--the adventure every boy dreams of. It's a story of total independence and making it on your own, and the hero is as brave and resourcefull as I dreamed I would be if it were me on that mountain. The book is as entertaining today as it was back then. I know my boy will love it. It's magic without witchcraft.

I am 10 years old and have just read this book for my monthlybook report. I am a big fan of this book, My Side Of The Mountain. Theauthor of this book is Jean Craighead George. The main characters ofthe book are Sam Gribley, Frightful , and The Baron Weasel. Sam Gribley is a boy 15 years old who ran away from home to live on the Catskill Mountains. He ran away from home because there were11 poeple in his family, 4 brothers, 4 sisters and 2 adults plus Sam. Frightful is Sam's falcon, he took her from her nest when she was a baby and raised her. He also had a friend named The Baron Weasel who he caught in his trap.
My favorite chapter in the book is when Sam found Frightful a falcon so that he wouldn't get lonely. My second favorite chapter is When The City Comes To Me. And it is when his family comes to visit Sam. His Mom wants him to live in the barn until he is 16 but he doesn't want to.
The chapter that I liked the least was I Cooperate With The Ending. I found this chapter to be sad because I was really interested in the book and I didn't want it to end.
When my Aunt was in grade school she recommended this book to my Dad who was also in grade school. My Dad recommened this book to me and gave it to me for Christmas. When my brother is old enough I will recommended this book to him. The reason why I would recommended it to my brother or anyone is because it is a good book, full of adventure and excitement and I really enjoyed it. This book made me feel like I was in the story as one of the characters.

A writer who always seems to write to the left of mainstream where the tropes are left wriggling in the dust, Thea likes her tales a bit gritty, a little bit sexy, and always a little bit dark. Her favorite stories involve flawed, angsty beings who aren't necessarily human smack dab in the middle of a dark, unsettling circumstance with no choice but to kick their way through to the light.

Fast-paced mayhem!

I can go a long time between stories about vampires. I can also go a long time between stories with confronting sex.

But when I do read them I want them to be good, so I’m pleased I fell off the wagon and picked them up.

This is one such book. And to top off my luck it’s full of vampires AND sex. AND it’s told with a needle-point wit.

Told in the first person it’s the story of Jade, a young woman drawn into the world of vampires. Because we’re taken into her mind and heart we’re sucked (no pun intended) very quickly into the vortex of her fears and desires.

The pace never slackens; it’s top gear all the way. And dare I say I’m liking her choice of vampire mate!

I am 110% addicted to this series!!

WHOAAAAALY MOLEY!! WOW! Just...WOW! What a fangtastic vampire tale! It is very intriguing, sexy, mystical, appalling, hot, magical, appealing, creepy, funny, snarky, shocking, passionate, awesome and oh so fangelicious all rolled up into this storyline that doesn't just grab your attention, it yanks you so far into the storyline that everything Jade feels, so do you…right down to the very depths of your soul! Jade is one unique character that is hard to explain, yet I loved her all the same. At times I thought she was in her later twenties, other times late teens, but yet I was still surprised when I did find out how old she really is! In some ways (the “normal” ones) she was a character I could totally relate to, understand why she did the things she did, but other times she reminded me of a 4 yr old who missed her much needed afternoon nap! Or a spanking. LOL Yet through it all I found myself rooting for her, admiring her, crying with & for her and yes, I will admit it, I was even a little jealous of her! I mean come on! Not one but TWO vampires vying for her attention? Maybe in different ways (I was nothing better than vampire bait), but still – TWO VAMPIRES!!! I love how the characters are all given their own story within the story. The vampires all have these unique abilities, or powers, how they came to be, etc. If you take all of these pieces - from the humor to the fear, the sass, the anger, the humans, vampires and everything else that this story encompasses, well, I find it all very over-the-top PERFANGTION! Thea has woven all of these parts together so magically that you can't help but be held spellbound! It all works together so beautifully, creating this fangtabulous story that by all rights should be too busy and/or hard to follow, but it isn't! Thea has achieved what so few authors can - a uniquely dark, naughty, evil, sassy & sarcastically witty vampire romance series! It is one helluva read that has so many components to it, mostly dark ones, but it still stays light enough to not become a true horror story. There is just enough humor, hints of romance & determination to not just survive, but to live that keeps this story so engrossing, entertaining and hopeful that maybe it will become a romance where the girl DOES get her vampire. Okay, maybe that hope is all mine! To me a great vampire book is one which includes the vampire declaring his true love for me, his one & only soul mate that he wants to claim, then change me to spend eternity by his side. Or under him...over him...*drool* Wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, that Thea is one fangtastically talented author who has me so enthralled that I don't ever want this to end! I have read a ton of vampire books. I have read a ton of other types of paranormal books. Some of those were light fluff, some great romances. Then there are the few that defy being categorized. This...this is one such story, book and series! YES! It truly is THAT FANGTASMIC! Thea is one helluva Master Storyteller for sure!! I cannot wait to see what future she has in store for us errrr, I mean Jade!!

Now I read book 1 in its entirety, but I did add a quick review for each of the 3 parts that make up this book 1 as follows:
THE RECRUITER REVIEW:
WOW!! Talk about being sucked completely into a book! This had me from the very start and I couldn't believe it when I hit "This story continues with the Priestess"! I love me my Vampires, but this is something different altogether. It's got all the makings of a great story - humor, sadness, broken heart, evil, mystery, intrigue and oh so much more! I cannot wait to find out who the good guy is, if the magic is real, if the curse is real, etc.
THE PRIESTESS REVIEW:
WHEW!! Just when you think you have SOMETHING figured out, WHAM! You find out just how wrong you are! I LOVE IT!! In this part Jade is trying to figure out just what the hell happened to her, but you also get to know her somewhat, or at least some of what got her here. As for figuring out anything else...well Thea expertly feeds us just enough information to feed OUR addiction, to whet our appetite, so to speak. Of course that also means that what information we are given just makes us thirsty for more! I have become a thrall - so easy to control! Must keep reading!! Must break spell...or get lost in it even deeper! Whichever way the rabbit hole goes. :-)
THE MEDIUM REVIEW:
Okay! Now THIS part is more closer to what I thought this story might be like...closer, but not too close! LOL There was definitely a lot more twists & turns that I was NOT in any way, shape or form expecting! WOW! Who'd a thunk it?!? Jade definitely pissed someone off in this life or her past ones because she sure got the wrong end happening to her now! I like that we got to know her a little more, but she is over-the-top sass! I know she has been through, well, everything, but really!?! Can she not dial back that attitude a bit, even in her own head?? Of course, that is just one more reason as to why I thoroughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to continue Jade's adventure in Vampire Land!

Jade gets her Vamp !!

It is extremely hard to describe Jade and Magnus' relationship. The book is full of heat, snark, sexyou banter, outsiders trying to interrupt their private time together. It's not your normal Vampire meets girl, sticks his fangs in and voila' you have a relationship. It builds slowly, but with a lot of heat and passion. I've heard the words fantastic, but I prefer organically blood induced sexual gymnastics. A definite read if you love "real" women and possessive Vampires. Thea Atkinson has made a 4☆ book well worth reading !!.

About the Author

Spencer G. Niles is professor and department head of Counselor Education in the Counseling Psychology and Rehabilitation Services Department at Pennsylvania State University.

 

JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey, Ed.D., has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the field of career development, including positions as high school counselor, director of guidance, university professor, career counselor in a university counseling center, developer of DISCOVER® (a computer-based career planning system), and Executive Director of ACT’s Educational Technology Center. She is currently Executive Director of Product Development for Kuder, Inc., and in that role works with state departments of education and labor in the conceptualization and implementation of career planning websites that serve as a virtual center for both students and adults across the life span as they engage in educational and career planning. She is also involved in the development of international career planning systems that include implementation of a highly customized career planning website and paraprofessional-level training for those who use it with students and clients.

 

Dr. Harris-Bowlsbey is the author or co-author of many journal articles and several books including Take Hold of Your Future (a college-level career planning curriculum) and Essentials in Career Counseling, a textbook co-authored with Dr. Norman Amundson and Dr. Spencer Niles. She has developed national and international versions of the Career Development Facilitator curriculum. She is a past-president of the National Career Development Association and a recipient of its Eminent Career Award

?Extends the editors' earlier examinations of the lives and work of psychology's frequently ignored foremothers. After a comprehensive selection process, 36 women whose scholarship has had a significant impact on psychology and epistemology were selected for inclusion: 14 born between 1847 and 1900; 8 born between 1901 and 1915; and 14 born between 1916 and 1945. In addition to the chapters detailing the personal and professional careers of each of these psychologists, O'Connell and Russo provide separate sections: general bibliographic resources relevant to all women contributors to psychology, including specific references for 185 individual women; a summary of American Psychological Association and American Psychological Foundation awards honoring the contributions of individual women through 1988; and a chronology of birth years and places for the 36 primary subjects of the book, with a listing of the major areas within psychology most significantly influenced by each of their contributions. The biographies, each written by different psychologists, are somewhat diverse in style and content, but all make for interesting reading. About the Author

AGNES N. O'CONNELL is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Community Psychology Programs at Montclair State College. Head of the American Psychological Association (APA)--Division of the Psychology of Women Task Force on History, Dr. O'Connell has also served as guest editor of the Psychology of Women Quarterly, is a fellow of APA's Division of the Psychology of Women, and is the recipient of numerous certificates of recognition.

NANCY FELIPE RUSSO is Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies and Director of Women's Studies at Arizona State University. A former president of APA's Division of the Psychology of Women, she has also served as associate editor for the Psychology of Women Quarterly. She is a fellow of five APA divisions, was the recipient of the 1985 Distinguished Leadership Award, and is the coauthor, with Agnes O'Connell, of many books and articles on the psychology of women. Their work in the history of women in psychology was recognized by a 1981 Distinguished Publication Award of the Association for Women in Psychology.

About the Author
Rick Szostak, PhD, is Professor of Economics at the University of Alberta where he has taught for 28 years. He is the author of ten books and 30 articles, all of an interdisciplinary nature. Several of his publications address how to do interdisciplinary research, teach interdisciplinary courses, administer interdisciplinary programs, or organize information in order to facilitate interdisciplinarity. As an Associate Dean, he created the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies at the UofA, the STS program, an Individualized Major, and two courses about interdisciplinarity. He teaches those courses as well as courses in STS and on economic growth. He has twice served as coeditor of the interdisciplinary journal "Issues in Integrative Studies. "He is President the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS), 2010-12. He can be contacted at rszostak@ualberta.ca.
