A Very Different Whodunnit!

First, I must tell you that I have a soft spot for sheep, having spent many a sleepless night in the lambing shed. Since Three Bags Full is written from the perspective of a flock of sheep living near a small Irish coastal village, I found the premise fresh and intriguing. The characters are first and foremost, well, sheep, who set out to solve the murder of their beloved (at least by the sheep) but eccentric shepherd. The fun comes as the sheep attempt to determine the murderer from a motley collection of villagers. As the sheep wrestle with concepts like motive and justice, their investigation turns up the dark underbelly of a town and a shepherd with secrets, but those secrets are filtered through their innocent eyes. I enjoyed this book. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but anyone who likes rural life and a fresh and unusual approach to a well-worn genre would likely enjoy it.

Garbled and Confusing

I found the book confusing and garbled. Apparently it is a translation. Perhaps in the original language there might not have been as much confusion. The premise suggested a mystery solved by a flock of sheep intent on uncovering the truth behind their shepherd’s death. As the dialogue moved between the sheep and the humans, the story simply became too complicated. Random implausible acts only vaguely linked the mystery to the situation, such as the appearance of a missing ram whose vast experience manipulates the flock like a four-legged Yoda. I wasn’t sure the story was meant as a philosophical allegory or just a complex fable about how sheep might learn to function without their shepherd. I stuck with it till the end and was disappointed.

Well, I finished it so I'll have to give it more than one.

Made no sense. The real killing was never explained. There was all kinds of ghost/soul stuff I couldn't get. Certainly found nothing funny. If the sheep had been allowed to be more human it might have made better sense. Also that other killing...nope. Really cannot recommend, to my sadness. One reviewer said he didn't like this or the Catcher in the Rye, I also didn't like both!

Transformational!

This book is full of mind-blowing and consciousness-expanding stuff. It will most likely trigger some inner discomfort at times, and I find myself having to "breathe through" what it brings up in me :), BUT that said, it will absolutely take you into a more spacious and altered state, if you open yourself to it. I haven't found a book this brilliant and that I've loved this much in a very long time!

Excellent resource for personal and professional!

As a therapist myself, I will recommend this book to both my own clients and my friends. It's so great to find a resource I can trust. This book gives real, practical information that is actually based on years of clinical experience and current research--a combination that is hard to find in self-help materials. It uses real life examples and explains everything so clearly and concisely, while also giving specific steps to take. And it's such an important topic!

Don't be a wimp

This volume is two books bound as one: a new (2008) third edition of The Non-Designer's Design Book and the 2006 second edition of The The Non-Designer's Type Book, 2nd Edition. These are excellent books for non-designers or in fact for anyone who has to deal with desktop publishing. They teach you how to get control over the design process by verbalizing what you are trying to accomplish, and learning to trust your eyes. Also: by not being a wimp.

The Design Book is specifically about page layout (not graphic design in general), and mostly about laying out bodies of type. The most interesting thing about this book is that it (gently) rejects the idea that design is strictly a knack or an intuitive process, and emphasizes verbalizing what you are trying to accomplish. "Once you can name the problem, you can find the solution." (p. 10) "You must know what the rule is before you can break it." (p. 49) The book enunciates several principles of good design. Through many examples of bad design and better design the book shows you how to check whether the principles are being violated and how to correct the violations.

There's a very clear chapter on the categories of type (Oldstyle, Modern, etc.): how to recognize them and when to use them. Very Good Feature: each page names the typefaces used in the examples.

The only real weakness of the Design Book is the chapter on using color. It was clear enough but did not seem integrated into the rest of the book.

The Type Book is a much-expanded version of Williams's Mac is not a typewriter, The (2nd Edition) and The Pc is Not a Typewriter. Unlike the Design Book it is mostly concerned with type at the individual character level. It deals with topics such as correct punctuation, different kinds of dashes, and when to set punctuation in italic. It includes all kinds of fine-tuning of the appearance of the type, such as kerning, tracking, ligatures, swash characters, hanging punctuation, correcting widows, and balancing the appearance of ragged-right type. This book allows a more intuitive approach than the Design Book, urging you to "listen to your eyes" (a mixed metaphor, but effective).

I have only a couple of minor gripes with the Type Book. (1) I think it has more fine-tuning that a non-designer is really going to use (e.g., fancy ligatures and swashes). The number of tweaks is overwhelming and may make you feel guilty for not using all these features. (2) I love Helvetica, but Williams continually bad-mouths it, and this is wearying. Apart from these minor points it is an excellent book, clearly-written and full of solid and useful information.

"The text owes much to Marshall McLuhan who, in fact, co-authored portions of an earlier version." This quote comes from the opening page - before the Foreword. It is well documented that McLuhan had trouble with writing and co-authors. Carpenter was an early collaborator from the Dew Line on and I think was able to interpret McLuhan the best.
Or was it the other way around? I hate to say this, but this may be the easiest read of McLuhan's ideas. It becomes hard to distinguish Carpenter's ideas from McLuhan's. It truly was a school of thought at University of Toronto. This book should get as much attention as any McLuhan text. (Note: it is hard to top the double dose of the "Medium is the Massage" in book and audio.)
Margaret Mead is quoted on the back cover saying "Astute staccato comment on present and needed changes in sensory modes, against a background of fantasied primitive life, annotated with extraordinary photographs." Ditto about the photos.
The "Visual Pun" is worth every cent you'll pay for this book that cost $3.95 in 1970. If you've got any McLuhan books, consider adding this to your collection - while you can.

Everyone should read this book!

This book is insightful in a way that most people do not nor can understand. I wish I would have read this twenty years earlier. Moreso for creative people, your basic consumer may have trouble understanding yet alone learning from this. It really makes you think about the relative nature of various societies and what you perceive.
