This book has a lot of excellent material, please don't get me wrong

This book has a lot of excellent material, please don't get me wrong. The main problem here, however, is that they're asking $50 for a book that's out of date. Despite this book being published September 2014, it has NOT been updated for what is arguably one of the most important patent-related decision in the last 20 years. Specifically, Alice Corp. Pty. Ltd. v. CLS Bank Intern., 134 S. Ct. 2347 (2014). SCOTUS released the Alice Corp. decision in June 2014, but NOLO didn't bother to update the 17th Edition of this book and the vast majority of material in this book relating to method or process patents (i.e. software, business patents) is not only out of date, but wrong in several sections. Considering that this book is targeted at lay persons, NOLO's decision to continue with publication despite knowing that the material is out of date is completely unacceptable. Instead of making the business-driven choice to publish, NOLO should have made the consumer-driven choice and delayed publication until the required updates could be made. I have contacted the company and they said they expect to post an update to the website sometime later this year, but that's unacceptable and too many people may never check the website (which was last updated in 2011).

Save your money for the 18th Edition; hopefully, it's up to date.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has a very good website and their customer service staff is very good. However, to successfully file a patent application yourself you must have this book.It was my main source for understanding the patent process, which is very complex and convoluted. I successfully filed my Provisional Patent Application and can now claim "Patent Pending" while I promote my product as I proceed with the full patent application over the next few months. You must have this book as your guide if you intend to file a patent application.

Perfect for a seasoned inventor, but too many irrelevancies for a first timer.

A very up to date, detailed but readable guide on preparing, 'prosecuting', protecting and exploiting your patent idea in the US.
Good coverage of physical US 'utility' patents and also software patents.
It covers all recent changes to the US system to fall into line with the generally accepted international 'first to file' approach, but also covers the pre-AIA rules on 'first to invent'.

This is the main problem with the book for a first-time inventor is that it covers too many irrelevant details.
A first-time inventor should buy the excellent "Patent Pending in 24 Hours" from the same publishers which actually does exactly what it says in the title.
A seasoned inventor, with several existing patents in various stages of maturity will find this book all he/she needs to understand all eventualities.

Thinking with Feynman diagrams

This is a book on quantum field theory using, much more than what is usual, the language of Feynman diagrams, which are pictorial-analytic expressions for terms of the perturbative series for S-matrix elements. Several years ago what could be considered a cruder version of this book circulated widely as a Yellow Report from CERN. It was an admirable text, from which most of us learned how to write the Feynman rules for gauge theories in exotic gauges, and how to renormalize everything by using the dimensional methods. Now comes the book version, polished so that beginners can use it, and with a little more tissue connecting the bones. The Yellow Report was called Diagrammar and became something of a religion. Perusing the book I see no reason why it should not have a comparable success. I particularly admire the graphic derivation of the Ward identities and the (also graphical) treatment of unitarity, very difficult to find antwhere else. The author, Veltman, is a great! authority in Field Theory and a fantastic teacher.

A QFT book for physicists not for mathematicians

This is a QFT book written by a physicist (Veltman is one of the

1999 Physics Nobel prize winners) for physicists. Mathematical

rigour was definitely not one of Veltman's major concerns when he

wrote this book. However clarity was indeed a big issue for him

and that is most unusual if you take into account that most Nobel

prize awarded physicist, are usually much more concerned about

"image", "posterity" and "mathematical rigour" than by

pedagogical matters.

This book is a very good one to start with if you want to learn

QFT. It makes no use of the path integral formalism (which is the

prefered one by "modern" QFT theorists) . The canonical

formalism (the one used in this book) makes explicit the local

nature of QFT; this is an important issue since locallity stems

from Lorentz invariance and QFT is nothing but the physical

theory resulting from quantum mechanics and restricted

relativity. I fully agree with the statement that the path

integral method should be sistematically discarded in

introductory QFT books like this one.

As its title indicates, Feynman diagrams are the central issue of

this book. Veltman explains in the introduction: "This is then

the aim: to make it clear which principles are behind the

(Feynman) rules and to define clarly the calculation details".

This book provides a clear logical frame that supports the

calculation machinery of perturbative QFT's and should be

recommended to any person willing to introduce himself/herself in

Quantum Field Theory as a first choice course book.

Taking into account that this is an introductory book, its

short extension (200 pages) its scope is limited to QED and no

serious attempt is made to treat non-abelian theories.

One minor (for me it is minor, since my english is also rather

poor) annoyance: Even I (my mother tonge is spanish) can see

that the writing style is not very good and that some of the used

expressions are nothing more that literal translations from dutch

into english.

it's a CERN yellow report from the 1970s sometime. this is the revision and printed version of it. he knows what he is doing, or at least the nobel commitee thought so when he got the prize with t'hooft. anyway it's called diagrammar and you can download it from the CERN site.

Tuna Stir-Fry
This is a quick and easy meal to make. Try experimenting with different fish, e.g., salmon, and a variety of different beneficial vegetables. This dish has been adapted from a recipe by Jamie Oliver.

SERVES 4
14 ounces fresh tuna steaks
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated
small bunch of cilantro, finely chopped, keep some for garnish
2 fresh chilies, seeded and finely chopped
3½ ounces dried egg noodles
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon canola oil, plus a little extra to cook the tuna
4 scallions, finely sliced
1 garlic clove, peeled and finely sliced
1 carrot, peeled and shaved into strips with a peeler
handful of sugar snap peas, sliced lengthways
1 red pepper, cut into strips
½ Chinese cabbage, thinly sliced
large handful of fresh bean sprouts

Place the tuna in a bowl with the soy sauce, ginger, cilantro, and one of the red chilies, cover, and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes. Cook the noodles according to the package instructions, rinse with cold water, drain well, and toss in the sesame oil.
Remove the tuna to paper towels and reserve the marinade. Rub the tuna lightly with a little canola oil. Heat the grill pan and place the tuna in when hot. Cook on each side for 1-2 minutes, transfer to a plate, and keep warm.
Heat the canola oil in a wok. Add the scallions and garlic, and cook for a few seconds. Add the carrot, sugar snap peas, red peppers, cabbage, and bean sprouts. Stir-fry until slightly softened. Add the noodles and warm through. Add the leftover marinade and cook for a few seconds. Sprinkle with cilantro for serving.

mostly anti-cancer, not hyperplasia

If you have cancer of the prostate and want to slow its progress or you would like to reduce your chances of getting cancer of the prostate, this is worthwhile purchase. Although my favorite book regarding diet and cancer is Richard Beliveau's Foods to Fight Cancer, Healthy Eating for Prostate care has several items of information that Beliveau's book doesn't...and it has recipes. Actually, unless you are really strapped for cash, I would recommend purchasing both books and maybe even a couple of others because, for some reason, not all the information regarding diet and cancer gets equal treatment from one book to another. For instance, green tea is more beneficial if some lemon is added to make it slightly acidic. I found this in only one book. Likewise, tomatoes and broccoli work better together.
I just received this book and have yet to try the recipes, but most of the ingredients are easy to come by and the number of ingredients in each recipe is not overly large. Actual sources for the recipes are listed. Some of the recipes have not been modified, but others have been adapted form existing recipes [to make them more healthful I suppose].
A complaint I do have is that the analysis of the recipes is limited to three things: Calories, grams of fat and grams of saturated fat per serving. There is no mention of protein, carbohydrate, or sugar.
Forty plus of the 176 pages discuss the various foods that should enhance prostate health. With each food or food group there is an explanation of how particular compounds in the foods work as anti-cancer agents.
At times there have been studies with seemingly conflicting conclusions. These are mentioned rather frequently in the book rather than just using the results from one study. The reader may have to make up his own mind or do more research. This is a fact of life because although there is definitely interest in the subject of diet and cancer and there are lots of correlations that strongly suggest diet has roles both in causing and in preventing or slowing cancer. Actual double-blind controlled studies with human subjects are few and far between because of the cost of doing such studies and lack of profit to finance them.
There is a two-page glossary and an index which could have been bigger and better.
If you do purchase an anti-cancer book and want to learn more, I would suggest taking a term such as "phytanic acid" -- it's on page 44, but not in the index-- and adding "cancer" and "NIH" to make up the search string "phytanic adcid cancer NIH".
The reason I didn't give this five stars is the missing protein component for the recipes. There was plenty of room and diet analysis programs are pretty common.

Holiday Hoax - Holiday Happiness

This was a great and quick read. Flowed seamlessly and the romance, relationship developed realistically. The happy ending finally came, but not without realistic stress and strife. Loved this book.

short, but ok read

this story was about a romance between a schoolteacher and a rich guy pretending to be a regular guy. i liked the part where she buys the xmas tree. if the charm of the rest of the story matched that it would've been a four star read. the editing was good, the storytelling was fine. i had no trouble finishing it, but i wasn't engaged in the characters enough to read it again.

Cutesey Christmas Story

This is one of those short, feel-good, holiday stories. The story moved at a really quick pace, and because the story is so short, the romance didn't have a whole lot of development, yet when the book ended, I was very satisfied with the reading experience it provided. Ms. Probst is a seasoned author and you can tell by the way in which the story is written. Furthermore, the editing is nice and tight, and although there isn't a whole lot of character development--another casualty of the short length--the author still managed to make me feel connected to them.

Aidan is from a wealthy family; he leads a very privileged life and is one of New York's most eligible bachelors. Aidan, however, is not happy with his life. To get away from everything for a while, and figure out what will make him happy, Aidan takes off to the upstate New York area for a few weeks. When the story begins, Aidan is working at a Christmas tree farm, leading so-called "normal" life. His most ardent wish is to find a nice normal woman who will love him for himself, and not for his family name or money. Enter Isabella, a sweet, beautiful, kindhearted third grade teacher. Isabella and Aidan meet when she comes to the tree farm where he works to buy a Christmas tree. Their first encounter is pretty funny, and from that point on the story moves at a fast pace to its conclusion.

At first Aidan does not reveal his family history, so Isabella has no idea that he is extremely wealthy. As you might expect, before Aidan can reveal the truth, Isabella finds out about his background, which then threatens the couple's new found happiness. Of course, things are quickly resolved and the two get their HEA. I really liked Aidan and I sympathized with his plight--I wish I could've empathized, but in order to do that I'd have to have a few million dollars of play money lying around. LOL Isabella too is a nice character. I loved the fact that the couple did not rush into bed, but instead took the time to time to get to know one another. Because the story is so short, we only get to see Aidan and Isabella together a few times, yet still when the two declared their love for one another I found it believable.

The book makes for a very satisfying read. I liked it and would recommend it as a worthwhile read. FYI, there is a love scene, which is fairly graphic, although not, IMO, overly so. Furthermore, the love scene is easily skipped and no crude language is used. Happy reading!

I have heard several times that the Marriage of Philology and Mercury is hard to read in the Latin. Furthermore, I have found no rich veins of intellectual history in it. But it is an important and widely read Latin work that epitomizes in a simple way the disciplines of Grammar, Dialectic (=logic), Rhetoric, Geometry, Arithmetic, Astronomy, and Harmony. Apparently the famous curriculum of the Seven Liberal Arts was made canonical by this work. We are lucky that a scholar of Stahl's powers chose to translate and comment on this work; Stahl was the leading scholar of Roman intellectual history, and the footnotes to the translation helpfully show connections to various lesser known works, like the Logic of Apuleius.

I care about the history of mathematics and logic, and thus was interested in the quadrivium speeches and the speech of Dialectic, which covers material from Aristotle's Categories, a little from On Interpretation, and some more from Prior Analytics. Much of Book VI, the speech of Geometry, is about physical geography, because of the etymology of the word geometry. I was surprised that in Book VII, the speech of Arithmetic, Martianus describes the Euclidean algorithm (in section 785); he does not prove it but even describing it is a much higher level than the rest of Book VII. Because there are good cross references, it is probably best to scan the book for particular topics to see how Martianus explains them, e.g. how a later Latin writer understood syllogisms or the five predicables (genus, species, difference, property, accident).

Stahl also translated Macrobius, Commentary on the Dream of Scipio by Macrobius (Records of Western Civilization Series) (Records of Western Civilization (Paperback)). The commentary by Stahl, Johnson and Burge is a separate volume, Martianus Capella and the Seven Liberal Arts: The Quadrivium of Martianus Capella, Latin Trad. (Records of Western Civilization Series).

Bit dated but you could do worse

For those familiar with the Roy Grace series I can honestly say that Peter James gets better with age! This is still quite a good read while not having the page turning, can't put down intrigue of some of his other works.
